Scorpio in the tarot: Death, and the art of letting something end
Yes, Scorpio is the Death card. No, it isn't scary. Its three decan cards are the 5, 6 and 7 of Cups: loss, memory and a table full of daydreams.

Why Scorpio is Death

Try this today
- Write down one thing that has already ended but that you haven't fully let go of yet. Say goodbye to it on paper.
- Notice what you are holding onto out of fear rather than love.
- If your Moon is in Scorpio, read the Death card for how you process feelings: deeply, then completely.
Scorpio zodiac sign: dates and traitsScorpio myth and constellation
Scorpio has a reputation. Intense, private, the friend who remembers everything and forgives on their own schedule. What people miss is how loyal they are, and how good they are at sitting with you through the worst week of your life without flinching.
Book T gives Scorpio to XIII Death, "The Child of the Great Transformers; the Lord of the Gates of Death," with the Hebrew letter Nun, which means fish. Every tarot reader has had to explain this card to a nervous friend: it is almost never read as physical death. It's the card of endings that make room for something else.
That is the Scorpio skill in one picture. Scorpio season arrives as leaves fall in the northern hemisphere, and the sign is associated with what lies under the surface: grief, desire, secrets, renewal. Death the card is the season the sign lives in, the cycle of letting go.
The sky behind it
Book T calls Death "The Child of the Great Transformers; the Lord of the Gates of Death" and gives it the Hebrew letter Nun. Its number, XIII, never moved: Marseille, Waite-Smith and Thoth all agree on it.
On the 1909 card
What Death shows, and what it asks a Scorpio

A skeleton in black armour on a white horse, carrying a black banner marked with a white rose; a king lies fallen, a bishop pleads, and a sun rises between two distant towers.
Look at the far right of the 1909 card. While the skeleton rides past fallen kings and pleading bishops, a sun is rising between two towers on the horizon. Something new is already coming up.
For a Scorpio, Death is a card of honesty. It asks what has run its course: a habit, a role, a relationship that is now only a memory. When it appears in a reading it often means transformation is already underway, and fighting it will cost more than letting it happen.
The three decans
Scorpio's three minor cards: the 5, 6, 7 of Cups

Scorpio is fixed water, so its decans are the middle Cups: the 5, 6 and 7. Book T calls them Loss in Pleasure, Pleasure, and Illusionary Success, three cards about what we feel, remember and imagine.
5 of Cups, Lord of Loss in Pleasure · Mars in Scorpio, 0° to 10° Scorpio · Oct 23 to Nov 2, 2026
A figure in a black cloak bows over three spilled cups, not yet seeing the two still standing behind them. Mars opens Scorpio with Loss in Pleasure, the card of grief and disappointment. The gentle lesson is in the two upright cups: not everything is gone.
6 of Cups, Lord of Pleasure · Sun in Scorpio, 10° to 20° Scorpio · Nov 2 to Nov 12, 2026
Two children in an old village garden, one handing the other a cup filled with white flowers. The Sun's decan is simply Pleasure, often read as nostalgia and innocence. Under the intensity, Scorpio is deeply sentimental and remembers every kindness.
7 of Cups, Lord of Illusionary Success · Venus in Scorpio, 20° to 30° Scorpio · Nov 12 to Nov 22, 2026
A figure in silhouette stares at seven cups floating in clouds, each holding a vision: a castle, jewels, a wreath, a dragon, a snake, a veiled figure, a head. Venus closes Scorpio with Illusionary Success, the card of fantasies and choices that might not be real. Scorpio's imagination is powerful, and this card asks which visions are worth chasing.
The sky behind it
5 of Cups: 10.0 days. 6 of Cups: 10.0. 7 of Cups: 9.9. Longest this cycle, the 5 of Cups; shortest, the 7 of Cups.
The court cards
The King of Cups and the Knight of Wands

The King of Cups ("The Prince of the Chariot of the Waters", 20° Libra to 20° Scorpio, Sun Oct 13 to Nov 12, 2026) holds Scorpio's first twenty degrees; the Knight of Wands ("The Lord of the Flame and the Lightning", 20° Scorpio to 20° Sagittarius, Sun Nov 12 to Dec 12, 2026) has the last ten.
The King of Cups, Book T's "Prince of the Chariot of the Waters," rules most of Scorpio. He is calm on the surface and deep underneath, a person who has learned to steer strong feelings instead of drowning in them.
At 20° Scorpio the Knight of Wands rides in, "The Lord of the Flame and the Lightning." After weeks of depth comes a burst of fire and restlessness, an early taste of Sagittarius.
The ruler
Mars, Scorpio's ruler, and The Tower

Try this today
- Lay Death and The Tower side by side. Name one change you'd rather let happen slowly, before it happens suddenly.
- Find where Mars sits in your chart, and Pluto too if you use modern rulers.
Mars is Scorpio's traditional ruler, and Mars' Major Arcana card is XVI The Tower. Modern astrologers often add Pluto as a co-ruler, and some modern decks link Pluto to XX Judgement, but that's a 20th-century addition. Book T knew only the seven classical planets.
Death and The Tower together sound like a lot. Look at it this way: Death is change that comes slowly and naturally, like a season turning. The Tower is change that comes all at once. Scorpio knows both, and its strength is not panicking at either. When something falls apart, Scorpio is often the one who calmly starts rebuilding.

When it comes up hard
Death reversed, or on a bad day
Reversed, Death can mean resisting change, clinging to what's already gone. For Scorpio that shadow often looks like a grudge, or a door left half open just in case. Ending things properly, kindly and completely is the whole point of this card, and Scorpio is better at it than most.

Quick answers
Is it bad that Scorpio is the Death card?
No. In tarot, Death is read as transformation and endings that make room for new beginnings, rarely as physical death. The 1909 Waite-Smith card even shows a sun rising on the horizon. Astrology here is a tradition for reflection, not prediction.
What is the Scorpio tarot card in the Thoth deck?
Also Death, number XIII. The Thoth deck kept the name and the attribution to Scorpio, with the Hebrew letter Nun.
Is Judgement a Scorpio card?
Only in some modern systems that link Pluto, Scorpio's modern co-ruler, to Judgement. In Book T, Judgement belongs to the element of fire and Scorpio's card is Death.
What is the Scorpio decan card for early November?
Usually the 6 of Cups, the Sun decan from 10° to 20° Scorpio, which the Sun crosses from about November 2 to November 12 (a day either way, depending on year and time zone). Late October birthdays get the 5 of Cups. Exact computed dates are in the table.
What tarot card is Scorpio rising?
Death, the same as any other placement in Scorpio. Readers who use rising signs often read it as how you meet change: head-on, without fuss.
When is Scorpio season in 2026 and 2027?
Oct 23, 2026, 09:38 UTC to Nov 22, 2026, 07:23 UTC, then Oct 23, 2027, 15:33 UTC to Nov 22, 2027, 13:16 UTC.
