Libra in the tarot: Justice, and a balance you have to keep choosing
The sign of the scales gets the card that holds them. Its decan cards trace a very Libra arc: a truce, a heartbreak, then a long rest.

Why Libra is Justice

Try this today
- Write down a decision you've been avoiding. List what's fair to you on one side and what's fair to others on the other. Look at which side is emptier.
- Notice where you smooth things over today. Was it peace, or just quiet?
- If your Venus or rising is in Libra, read Justice there too: fairness as part of how you love and how you show up.
Libra zodiac sign: dates and traitsLibra myth and constellation
Libra can see every side of an argument, which is a gift right up until someone asks where they want to eat. They want things to be fair, and pretty, and for everyone to get along, and they will put real effort into making that happen.
Book T gives Libra to Justice, "The Daughter of the Lords of Truth; the Ruler of the Balance," with the Hebrew letter Lamed, often read as an ox-goad, the stick a farmer uses to guide an animal forward. It's the one zodiac card whose picture matches the sign's symbol exactly: a seated figure holds a pair of level scales.
Libra is also the other half of tarot's most famous renumbering. Older Marseille-pattern decks put Justice at VIII. The Golden Dawn moved it to XI so that Leo's Strength would come before it, in zodiac order, and the 1909 Waite-Smith deck printed Justice as XI. That's why your deck and your friend's antique deck might disagree.
The sky behind it
Book T calls Justice "The Daughter of the Lords of Truth; the Ruler of the Balance" and gives it the Hebrew letter Lamed. In older Marseille-pattern decks this card is number VIII; the Golden Dawn moved it to XI so that the Leo and Libra cards fall in zodiac order, and the 1909 Waite-Smith deck printed it that way.

What Justice shows, and what it asks a Libra

A crowned figure in red seated between two pillars, an upright double-edged sword in the right hand and level scales in the left.
Look at the sword in the card. People notice the scales first, but Justice holds an upright, double-edged blade in the other hand. Fairness, the card says, sometimes means cutting something cleanly.
For a Libra this is the hard part. You are wonderful at weighing. The card asks you to finish weighing and act on what the scales say. In a reading, Justice often points to consequences, contracts, honest conversations and decisions that have been waiting too long.
The three decans
Libra's three minor cards: the 2, 3, 4 of Swords

Libra is cardinal air, so it opens the Swords sequence with the 2, 3 and 4. Book T titles them Peace Restored, Sorrow, and Rest from Strife, which reads almost like a short story about a relationship.
2 of Swords, Lord of Peace Restored · Moon in Libra, 0° to 10° Libra · Sep 23 to Oct 3, 2026
A blindfolded woman sits by the sea at night, arms crossed over her chest, holding two long swords balanced on her shoulders under a crescent moon. The Moon's decan is Peace Restored, a truce held carefully in balance. Very Libra: calm on the outside, a lot of effort holding those swords level on the inside.
3 of Swords, Lord of Sorrow · Saturn in Libra, 10° to 20° Libra · Oct 3 to Oct 13, 2026
A red heart pierced by three swords hangs against grey rain clouds. Saturn brings Sorrow, the most direct image in the deck. For Libra it's the hurt of a broken balance: a disagreement, a let-down, a fairness that didn't happen. The card is honest about pain and doesn't dress it up.
4 of Swords, Lord of Rest from Strife · Jupiter in Libra, 20° to 30° Libra · Oct 13 to Oct 23, 2026
A carved knight lies on a tomb, hands together in prayer, three swords on the wall above and one along the side. Jupiter closes Libra with Rest from Strife. After the heartbreak, recovery. It's the card of stepping back, sleeping it off and letting things settle before the next decision.
The sky behind it
2 of Swords: 10.2 days. 3 of Swords: 10.1. 4 of Swords: 10.1. Longest this cycle, the 2 of Swords; shortest, the 4 of Swords.
The court cards
The Queen of Swords and the King of Cups

The Queen of Swords ("The Queen of the Thrones of Air", 20° Virgo to 20° Libra, Sun Sep 12 to Oct 13, 2026) holds Libra's first twenty degrees; the King of Cups ("The Prince of the Chariot of the Waters", 20° Libra to 20° Scorpio, Sun Oct 13 to Nov 12, 2026) has the last ten.
The Queen of Swords, Book T's "Queen of the Thrones of Air," rules most of Libra. She is sharp, fair and unflinchingly honest, the friend who tells you the truth because she respects you.
In Libra's last ten degrees the King of Cups takes over, Book T's "Prince of the Chariot of the Waters." The clear thinking of air starts to soften into the deep feeling of Scorpio season.
The ruler
Venus, Libra's ruler, and The Empress

Try this today
- Put Justice next to The Empress. Make one small thing in your space more beautiful, and one conversation more honest.
- Look up your Venus sign. Astrologers read it as what you find beautiful and how you relate to others.
Venus rules Libra, as it does Taurus, and Venus' Major Arcana card is III The Empress. In Taurus, The Empress is about the body and the harvest. In Libra she shows up as beauty, harmony and the pleasure of relationships, the Venus that loves art, good manners and a well-set table.
With Justice in front and The Empress behind, Libra wants a world that is both fair and lovely. The Empress reminds a Libra that kindness and beauty are values worth defending. Justice reminds The Empress that pretty isn't the same as right.

Justice reversed, or on a bad day
Reversed, Justice can mean unfairness, avoidance or a decision made to keep the peace rather than to be right. For Libra, the shadow is often pleasing everyone and choosing no one, including yourself. The fix: put your own needs on the scale too. They count.

Quick answers
Is Justice card 8 or 11?
Both, depending on the deck. Marseille-pattern decks number it VIII. The Golden Dawn moved it to XI so Strength (Leo) would come before Justice (Libra), matching the zodiac, and the Waite-Smith deck of 1909 followed. Crowley's Thoth deck kept VIII and renamed the card Adjustment.
Why is the 3 of Swords a Libra card?
Because the Golden Dawn ran the numbered cards through the decans in order, and the second decan of Libra, ruled by Saturn, landed on the 3 of Swords. Book T titles it Lord of Sorrow. For a sign about harmony, it's a reminder that a broken balance hurts.
What is Libra's tarot card in the Thoth deck?
Adjustment, numbered VIII. It's the same card as Justice with a new name, still assigned to Libra and the Hebrew letter Lamed.
What tarot card is a Libra Moon?
Justice, the same as a Libra Sun. Book T attributes cards to signs, so they apply to any planet in Libra. Many readers would read Justice for a Libra Moon as a deep emotional need for fairness.
When is Libra season in 2026 and 2027?
Sep 23, 2026, 00:05 UTC to Oct 23, 2026, 09:38 UTC, then Sep 23, 2027, 06:02 UTC to Oct 23, 2027, 15:33 UTC.
