Libra has no Greek myth, and that is the story
The Greeks saw a scorpion's claws here. Babylon saw scales. Rome agreed with Babylon, and the balance stayed.
Johann Bayer, Uranometria, 1603
At a glance
Libra has no classic Greek myth. Greek astronomers called its stars Chelai, the Scorpion's Claws. The scales come from Babylon and Rome, later tied to Justice.

The myth
The claws that became a balance

Try this today
- Weigh one decision this week out loud with someone you trust. Name both pans of the scale.
- Find a place where you have been seeing claws and ask if it is really a balance.
- On a May night, look between Spica and Antares for the two old claw stars.
Read Aratus's Phaenomena, the great Greek star poem of around 275 BC, and you will not find Libra. In its place he names the Chelai, the Claws, the outstretched pincers of the Scorpion. Ptolemy's Almagest, the star catalogue of around AD 150, still lists the same stars as the Claws. For Greek astronomers the zodiac had a huge scorpion taking up two signs' worth of sky.
You can still hear it in the star names. Libra's two brightest stars are Zubenelgenubi and Zubeneschamali, Arabic for the "southern claw" and the "northern claw."
But not everyone saw claws. Babylonian astronomers had already called this group zibānītu, the Scales, connected with the sun god Shamash and with justice. The Romans took up the scales, Libra in Latin, and by the 1st century BC it was a separate sign. Virgil, writing the Georgics, even jokes that the Scorpion is pulling in its claws to make room in the sky for the deified Augustus.
So Libra's "myth" is really an argument about what these stars are, settled in favour of the balance.

The scales of Justice, next door

Once the Scales sat beside the Maiden, it was natural to read them together: Virgo as Justice, Libra as the balance she holds. Many later star maps draw it that way, and modern astrology inherits the image of fairness and weighing.
There is also a calendar explanation, given by ancient writers and repeated ever since: in antiquity the Sun reached the autumn equinox, the day of equal light and dark, as it entered this part of the zodiac. A balance for the day of balance. It is a neat fit, but notice that it is about the calendar, not about any god's story.

Finding Libra: Apr 29 to May 22, 2027

Libra is faint and sits between Virgo's Spica and Scorpius's red Antares. Find Zubenelgenubi and Zubeneschamali, the two "claws," roughly halfway between them.

What astrologers do with a sign that is an object
Venus rules Libra in traditional astrology, and the sign is read as relational: partners, fairness, aesthetics, weighing two sides. It is the only zodiac sign that is not a living being, which some astrologers take as a clue that Libra is about judgement rather than instinct. If you are reading your Libra placements, the history offers one honest lesson: what looks like a fixed, ancient symbol was once a live disagreement.

Quick answers
What is the Greek myth of Libra?
There is no classic Greek myth. The Greeks saw these stars as the Claws (Chelai) of Scorpius. The scales come from Babylonian and Roman tradition, and were later linked to Astraea, goddess of justice.
Which Greek god is associated with Libra?
Later tradition ties the scales to Astraea or Dike (Justice), who is Virgo next door. Astrologically, Libra is ruled by Venus, the Roman Aphrodite.
Why is Libra the only zodiac sign that is an object?
Because it began as part of a creature, the Scorpion's claws, and was redrawn as scales. The Babylonians and Romans read it as a balance.
What do Libra's star names mean?
Zubenelgenubi and Zubeneschamali come from Arabic for the southern and northern claw, a leftover of the Greek view.
When did Libra become its own sign?
The Babylonians already had the Scales. In the Greco-Roman world the name Libra was standard by the 1st century BC.
