Johann Bayer's 1603 Uranometria plate of Virgo: a winged maiden holding an ear of wheat engraved on a deep blue sky, the stars heightened in gold

Zodiac myths · Virgo

Virgo is Justice, who gave up on us and went to the stars

She lived among people in the golden age. She stayed as long as she could. Then she left, and you can still see where she went.

Johann Bayer, Uranometria, 1603

At a glance

In Greek myth Virgo is usually Dike or Astraea, the goddess of justice. Aratus says she lived among humans until they grew violent, then rose into the sky.

  • Write down one thing you think is unfair and one small, fair thing you can do about it.
  • In spring, arc from the Big Dipper's handle to Arcturus, then on to Spica.
  • Notice where you are sorting wheat from chaff this week. Be generous with the wheat.

Aratus, the poet who turned the Greek star map into verse around 275 BC, tells Virgo's story at unusual length, and it is the saddest page in the Phaenomena.

In the golden age, he says, Justice (Dike) lived on earth among ordinary people. She sat with the old men in the marketplace and urged them toward fair judgements. There was no war, no sea trade, no greed: oxen and ploughs and plenty.

In the silver age people grew worse, and she came less often, only in the evenings, down from the hills, to scold them and warn them it would get worse. In the bronze age they forged the first swords and ate the ox that pulled their plough. That was too much. Justice left for the sky, and she is the maiden you see there, near the herdsman Boötes.

Ovid gives the Roman version in the first book of the Metamorphoses: in the iron age, with violence everywhere, the maiden Astraea, "the starry one," was the last of the immortals to leave the blood-soaked earth. The Romans called her Astraea, and the poets kept hoping she would come back.

Demeter, Erigone, and the ear of wheat

Virgo carries an ear of wheat: Spica, the brightest star in her hand.Alexander Jamieson, A Celestial Atlas, 1822 · US Naval Observatory Library

Virgo was the most argued-over figure in the zodiac, and Hyginus lists several readings. Some said she was Demeter (Ceres), the grain goddess, which fits the star in her hand: Spica, Latin for "ear of wheat." Others said she was Erigone, daughter of Icarius of Athens, who learned the art of wine from Dionysus; in that story her father and his loyal dog also became stars, as Boötes and the Dog.

The Babylonians had already seen a furrow here: MUL.APIN names the star Spica the Furrow (AB.SÍN), linked with the grain goddess Shala. So the harvest idea is old, and the justice idea was layered on top by Greek poets.

Virgo is the second-largest constellation in the sky. Follow the curve of the Big Dipper's handle to orange Arcturus, then "speed on to Spica," the blue-white star in the maiden's hand.

What astrology made of the maiden

Mercury rules Virgo in traditional astrology, and the sign is read as careful, useful, discerning and devoted to getting things right. That is close to Aratus's Justice, who sat with the elders and pressed them to judge fairly. It is also close to the harvest: separating wheat from chaff. Hold the two images, the judge and the gleaner, next to your Virgo placements.

Quick answers

What is the Greek myth of Virgo?

The best-known version, from Aratus, makes Virgo Dike (Justice), who lived among people in the golden age and left for the stars as humanity grew violent. Ovid calls her Astraea.

Which goddess is Virgo?

Ancient writers disagreed. Astraea or Dike (Justice) is the classic answer; Hyginus also records Demeter (Ceres) and the Athenian Erigone.

Is Virgo Persephone?

Some modern retellings say so, through her mother Demeter. The ancient star texts more often name Dike, Demeter or Erigone.

What is Virgo holding?

An ear of wheat. Its brightest star, Spica, takes its name from the Latin for that ear of grain.

Why does Virgo connect to Libra?

In later tradition the scales of Libra beside her were read as the scales of Justice, though the Greeks originally saw those stars as the Scorpion's claws.
