Sagittarius is not Chiron, and the real story is better
The archer most people picture is a wise centaur. The oldest source names someone else: the Muses' friend who invented archery and applause.
Johann Bayer, Uranometria, 1603

Crotus, the Muses' friend

- Be someone's Crotus this week: tell a friend, specifically, what you loved about their work.
- Find the Teapot on a summer night and follow its steam toward the galactic centre.

On Mount Helicon lived the nine Muses, and with them a woman named Eupheme, their nurse. Her son Crotus was raised among them. His father, the Catasterisms attributed to Eratosthenes say, was Pan, the goat-legged god of wild places.
Crotus was a hunter, and he is credited with inventing archery. He was also, which is the charming part, the Muses' biggest fan. When they sang, he listened, and he showed his approval by clapping. Hyginus repeats it: Crotus is said to have invented applause, so that the Muses would know they had been heard.
The Muses asked Zeus to honour him, and Zeus set him in the sky as the archer, with signs of his life around him. Hyginus says he was drawn with horse's legs and a satyr's tail, because he rode horses and was Pan's son, and that the little ring of stars at his feet, the Southern Crown, was the wreath he wore at play.
Over time artists turned the figure into a full centaur, and the story faded. The bow stayed.
Other tellings
So is Sagittarius Chiron?

You will see it everywhere, and the old sources do not support it. Chiron, the wise centaur who taught Achilles, Asclepius and Jason, has his own constellation: Centaurus, in the southern sky. Hyginus and the Catasterisms place Chiron there, and explain that Sagittarius cannot be a centaur because centaurs did not use bows.
Some later writers did put Chiron in Sagittarius, and once the archer was drawn with four hooves the confusion stuck. Even modern astrology's Chiron, the small body discovered in 1977, is named after the centaur rather than the sign. If you love the Chiron reading, you are in long company; just know it is a later merger.

Finding Sagittarius: Jun 18 to Jul 22, 2027

In summer, look low in the south, east of Scorpius, for the Teapot, a bright asterism inside Sagittarius. The steam rising from its spout is the Milky Way, and the centre of our galaxy lies in that direction.

Why the archer means the long view
Jupiter rules Sagittarius in traditional astrology, and the sign is read as restless, philosophical, funny and aimed at the horizon. The Crotus story fits better than you might think: a hunter who lived among poets, who aimed outward and also cheered loudest for other people's art. Read it next to your Sagittarius placements.
