The myth

The day the gods ran

Half of him went under the water and became a fish. Half stayed a goat. He survived.Urania's Mirror, London 1824 · Library of Congress

Try this today

  • Name a time you survived by becoming two things at once. Give yourself credit for the tail.
  • On a late-summer night, find Altair, then look south for the faint triangle of the goat.
  • Choose one goal for the long climb and one for the water: something steady, something felt.

Typhon was the worst monster in Greek myth, a storm-giant with a hundred serpent heads, sent by Earth against Zeus and the Olympians. When he came, the gods did not stand and fight. They fled to Egypt and hid in animal shapes. Ovid, in the Metamorphoses, has the list: Zeus as a ram, Apollo as a raven, Dionysus as a goat, Artemis as a cat, Hera as a cow, Aphrodite as a fish, Hermes as an ibis.

Hyginus gives Pan's part. Pan threw himself into the river, and he changed in a hurry: the half of him under water became a fish, and the half above stayed a goat. Zeus, impressed by the trick, set the shape in the sky.

The Catasterisms attributed to Eratosthenes tell it differently. There the figure is Aegipan, Zeus's foster-brother, raised with him on the goat Amaltheia's milk. In the war against the Titans, Aegipan blew a conch shell and the noise sent the Titans into a terror, the first "panic." The fish tail, in that version, is for the seashell.

The sea-goat is a strange creature in any telling, and that is the point. It is what you become when you have to be two things at once to survive.

The goat-fish is older than Greece

The Greeks inherited the goat-fish from Babylon and gave it a Greek story.Alexander Jamieson, A Celestial Atlas, 1822 · US Naval Observatory Library

This is one zodiac figure where the Greek stories are clearly late arrivals. Babylonian astronomers already had the Goat-Fish, SUḪUR.MAŠ, listed in MUL.APIN and carved on boundary stones, and it was the emblem of Ea (Enki), god of fresh water and wisdom.

The Greeks inherited the odd shape and needed a story for it, so they reached for Pan and the Typhon panic. Knowing that does not spoil the myth. It shows you something real about how the zodiac was built: older pictures, retold by each culture that looked up at them.

Capricornus is faint, a wide triangle of modest stars south of Altair and the Eagle. Look on late-summer evenings; its brightest star is Deneb Algedi, "the kid's tail."

Why the sea-goat means the long climb

Saturn rules Capricorn in traditional astrology, and the sign is read as patient, ambitious and built for the long climb. In antiquity the winter solstice fell among its stars, which is why the southern tropic is the Tropic of Capricorn. The myth adds what the stereotype leaves out: the sea-goat is adaptive. It is mountain and water at once. Hold that against your Capricorn placements.

Quick answers

What is the Greek myth of Capricorn?

When the monster Typhon attacked the gods, Pan jumped into a river to escape and changed only halfway, into a goat with a fish's tail. Zeus placed that shape in the stars.

Why is Capricorn a sea-goat?

The shape comes from Babylon, where the goat-fish was the emblem of the water god Ea. Greek myth explained it through Pan or Aegipan.

Who is the Greek god of Capricorn?

Pan, or the related Aegipan, in the myths. Astrologically Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, the Roman Cronus.

Is Capricorn connected to Amaltheia?

Some modern retellings link it to Amaltheia, the goat who nursed Zeus. In the ancient star texts Amaltheia is usually placed in Auriga (the star Capella), and Capricorn is Pan or Aegipan.

Why is it called the Tropic of Capricorn?

In antiquity the Sun reached the winter solstice among Capricorn's stars, and the line where the Sun stands overhead at that solstice took the name.
