The name
Why it is called the Worm Moon
The Farmers' Almanac and NASA call March's full moon the Worm Moon. The Almanac connects it with earthworms appearing as the ground thaws, and notes an older explanation from an 18th-century account linking it to beetle larvae emerging from tree bark. It also lists names like the Crow Moon and the Sap Moon.
The names were gathered from Native American, colonial and European traditions, and vary widely between nations. They are a modern popular list, not one ancient source.
In the Southern Hemisphere this is the autumn equinox, so a full moon now is close to the southern Harvest Moon in spirit, the full moon nearest the autumn equinox. Some southern calendars do use that name for it.
