The new moon
The new moon at the end of the zodiac
Early March is a strange in-between. In the north the snow is going grey, the first crocuses are thinking about it, and the clocks are about to spring forward in the US. The new moon in Pisces lands right in that blur.
Pisces is the last sign of the zodiac, the fish swimming in two directions. Astrologers connect it with dreams, imagination, compassion, music, sleep and letting go. A Pisces new moon is traditionally less about ambition and more about intuition: what do you sense, rather than what do you plan?
Like December's Sagittarius new moon, this one has no major planet tightly aspecting it at the exact moment. Mercury and Venus are both back in Aquarius. Mars and Jupiter are in Leo, both retrograde. So the space around the new moon itself is quiet.
That quiet suits Pisces. If you have been running on empty since January, this is the new moon to set an intention about rest, art or spiritual practice. Two weeks later, the equinox and the Aries season start the zodiac over again. Give yourself a soft landing first.

Pisces is ruled by Jupiter in traditional astrology and Neptune in modern practice. Jupiter is retrograde in Leo at this new moon, and Neptune sits in early Aries, so the sign's rulers are both shifting. Astrologers might read that as dreams being re-sorted.
A Pisces intention can be vague in a good way: "more music in my week," "sleep before midnight," "forgive my younger self." It can also be creative: start the watercolor kit, write lyrics, learn to swim properly.
This is also a good new moon for kindness, including the unglamorous kind like returning a call to someone lonely.

The dark of the Moon
No name, and the last dark sky of winter
New moons have no folk name in the Farmers' Almanac or NASA lists. March's name, the Worm Moon, comes with the full moon two weeks later, right at the equinox.
In the Northern Hemisphere this new moon week is the last good stretch of long dark nights before spring. In the US, daylight saving time begins in March too, which pushes sunset later and stargazing later with it.
In the Southern Hemisphere it is early autumn, and the evenings are just starting to close in. A Pisces new moon there sits nicely with the slowing down of the season.
