The new moon
The first new moon of the zodiac year
Spring is finally real in the north. Jackets come off, people start running again, everyone's group chat suddenly has plans. Into that comes the first new moon of the zodiac year, in Aries.
Aries is the ram, the sign astrologers link with beginnings, courage, impulse and energy. Its new moon is traditionally the boldest intention-setting moment of the year: the new job, the new sport, the fresh start you have been talking about since winter.
This year there is a serious companion. Saturn sits in Aries right beside the new moon. Saturn is the planet astrologers associate with time, limits, structure and responsibility. A new moon conjunct Saturn is often read as a beginning that asks for commitment. Fast starts are fine, but this one rewards a plan.
The rest of the sky helps. Mars and Jupiter are both in Leo, making flowing trines to the new moon. In traditional terms that is fire supporting fire: enthusiasm, confidence and generosity behind your plan. It is one of the most energetic new moons on this calendar.

Aries new moon: one brave thing, with a schedule
Try this today
- Pick a start date in the next seven days and a check-in date 12 weeks later.
- Do one physical thing that scares you a bit: a cold swim, a climbing wall, a first run.
- Say no to one recurring commitment that drains you.
Mars rules Aries, and Mars is moving forward again in Leo after its winter retrograde. Astrologers read that as momentum coming back.
With Saturn on the new moon, the most traditional advice is to begin something you are willing to keep showing up for: training for a race with an actual plan, starting a business with a budget, learning an instrument with a weekly lesson.
It is also a fine new moon to set boundaries. Aries is blunt. Saturn is firm. Together they are great at saying no.
Jupiter and the Moon
Jupiter leans hardest on this new moon
3 planets touch 16°57′ Aries:
- Jupiter trine the Moon (17°03′ Leo, orb 0.1°): growth, luck and excess. The aspect lends an easy, flowing assist.
- Saturn conjunct the Moon (17°35′ Aries, orb 0.6°): limits, time and commitment. The aspect fuses its theme straight into the lunation.
- Mars trine the Moon (21°06′ Leo, orb 4.2°): drive, heat and conflict. The aspect lends an easy, flowing assist.
Jupiter is the one planet in reverse on April 6.

The dark of the Moon
No name, but the start of everything
New moons get no folk name in the Farmers' Almanac or NASA lists. April's name, the Pink Moon, belongs to the full moon two weeks later.
Astrologers often treat the first new moon after the Sun enters Aries as the start of the lunar year for intention setting. Some people write a whole year of goals now instead of in January.
In the Southern Hemisphere it is mid-autumn, with leaves turning and evenings closing in. A new moon of beginnings in a season of slowing down can feel odd. The southern reading: start the inner project, the one that grows over winter.

A note about Saturn
Saturn entered Aries in 2026 and stays there into 2028, so it will sit near several Aries lunations in this period. This new moon is the one where they meet most closely. If your birthday is in early-to-mid April, astrologers would say this new moon touches your Sun.
