Two Scorpio full moons in a row
Here is something rare-ish on this calendar: two full moons in a row in the same sign. The April Pink Moon sat at the very first degree of Scorpio. The May Flower Moon sits at the very last. Between them, the Moon has walked the whole sign.
Astrologers give the last degree of a sign a special name, the anaretic degree, and read it as a culmination: things ending, completing or coming to a crisis point so the next chapter can start. A full moon at that degree doubles the theme. Whatever started in the November Scorpio new moon is traditionally wrapping up now.
The Sun sits at the last degree of Taurus, about to cross into Gemini. So the whole axis is on the edge. The name
Why it is called the Flower Moon
The Farmers' Almanac and NASA call May's full moon the Flower Moon, for the flowers that bloom in abundance in May across much of North America. The Almanac also lists names like the Corn Planting Moon and the Milk Moon.
These names were collected from various Native American, colonial and European sources, and the Almanac is careful to say they are not a single unified tradition.
It is also a seasonal Blue Moon. Between the March equinox (March 20) and the June solstice (June 21) there are four full moons this year: March 22, April 20, May 20 and June 19. The old Maine Farmers' Almanac rule calls the third of four in a season a Blue Moon, and that is this one. It will not look blue.
