The name
Why it is called the Beaver Moon
The Farmers' Almanac and NASA both call November's full moon the Beaver Moon. The Almanac explains it as the season when beavers retreat into their lodges with their winter food, and when trappers once set traps before the swamps froze. Other names listed by the Almanac for this moon include the Frost Moon.
The Almanac says many of these names were collected from Native American and early colonial traditions, and it is careful to say they vary a lot by nation and region. NASA uses the same Maine Farmers' Almanac set. They are a modern popular calendar, not a single ancient one.
Below the equator, November is late spring, so the beaver name fits nothing about the season. Many Southern Hemisphere moon calendars simply use the name of the opposite month instead. We note that as a modern convention, not a fixed rule.
