The new moon
The new moon with nothing in its way
December gets loud fast. Office parties, the shopping countdown, the existential end-of-year scroll through everyone else's wins. The new moon in Sagittarius arrives right before all of that peaks, about two weeks before the solstice.
Sagittarius is the archer, the sign astrologers connect with travel, study, belief and the urge to see what is over the next hill. A new moon there is a classic time to set a long-range intention: the trip, the course, the move, the thing you would do if you were a little braver.
Here is what makes this one unusual. When we checked the major aspects at the exact moment, no planet is tightly conjunct, square or opposite the new moon. Mercury has just entered Sagittarius but sits more than a dozen degrees behind. Mercury and Venus are both direct again. In astrology terms, it is a clean sky.
A clean new moon is not a magic one. It just means there is less noise around the intention. If you have been waiting for a sign to plan 2027, this is about as plain as the sky gets.

Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, which sits in Leo at this new moon and makes a wide, friendly trine from fire sign to fire sign. Astrologers read Jupiter as growth and generosity, so the tone here is optimistic.
The risk with Sagittarius is the same as its gift: too many big ideas. You might want to learn Spanish, run a half marathon, visit Lisbon and finally write the novel, all by March. Choose one. Write it down with a date next to it.
The new moon is also a nice time for honesty in the Sagittarian style, which is blunt but warm. If there is a belief about yourself you have outgrown, this is the month to say so out loud.

The dark of the Moon
The darkest sky of the year, almost
In the Northern Hemisphere, nights in early December are among the longest of the year, and a new moon takes the Moon out of the sky all night. That combination makes this week one of the best of the year for dark-sky watching, cold permitting.
It is also the week of the Geminid meteor shower, which NASA's guide lists as peaking in mid-December. With the Moon only a waxing crescent then, setting in the evening, the shower is not drowned out by moonlight this year. Check a local forecast and dress warmer than you think.
New moons have no folk name in the Farmers' Almanac list. The month's name, the Cold Moon, arrives with the full moon on the night of the solstice week.

What should I manifest on the Sagittarius new moon in December 2026?
Astrologers usually suggest one long-range goal: travel, study, a move, a belief you want to live by. Because no major planet crowds this new moon, many see it as a clear moment for a single big intention rather than a list.
Is Mercury retrograde during the December 2026 new moon?
No. Mercury turned direct in November and is moving forward through early Sagittarius at this new moon. Venus is direct too.
Is the December 2026 new moon a good time to see the Geminids?
It helps. The Moon is only a waxing crescent around the mid-December peak and sets in the evening, so moonlight will not wash out fainter meteors. Clouds and city lights are the bigger problem.
How far away is the Moon at the new moon december 2026?
404,688 km, one of the farthest on this calendar (our cutoff is 360,000 km). Rank: 13th of 14.
