The full moon

The full moon that comes home for the holidays

It is the night before Christmas Eve in the Americas, early Christmas Eve in Europe. Kitchens are full, someone is wrapping presents badly, and the Moon is huge and bright over the roofs. December's full moon falls in Cancer, the sign astrologers connect with home, family, food and the memories that make you cry at a commercial.

The Sun is opposite in Capricorn, just a few days past the solstice. So the axis is home versus career, private life versus public duty. If you have spent December working late and saying yes to everything, this full moon is the traditional moment it catches up with you, gently or not.

This is also the closest full moon of the Nov 2026 to May 2027 stretch on this calendar, and it passes our supermoon line. Up to a point, that means it looks a touch bigger and brighter than an average full moon. In astrology, closeness is usually read as intensity. Feelings run bigger, and so does the urge to fix everyone's holiday.

Saturn in Aries squares this full moon, and Neptune does too from early Aries. Astrologers read that pairing as a reality check against nostalgia: the holiday you imagine versus the one in front of you. Let the real one be enough.

In Cancer

Try this today

  • Cook one dish from your childhood, even badly.
  • Call the person who used to host the holidays, or write down a memory of them.
  • Make one corner of your home ridiculously comfortable and sit in it for an hour.

In traditional astrology the Moon rules Cancer, so a full moon in Cancer is the Moon at its most itself. Astrologers read that as emotions near the surface, a pull toward family and food, and memory being louder than usual.

Mercury sits opposite the Moon here, in late Sagittarius near the Sun. That can make conversations at the table frank, sometimes more frank than anyone planned. A good rule for the week: feelings first, logistics later.

If family is complicated for you, Cancer does not insist on blood relatives. Chosen family counts. So does a quiet night alone with soup and an old movie.

Neptune and the Moon

Neptune leans hardest on this full moon

3 planets touch 2°14′ Cancer:

  • Neptune square the Moon (1°39′ Aries, orb 0.6°): dreams, fog and idealism. The aspect adds friction and pressure to act.
  • Mercury opposite the Moon (27°19′ Sagittarius, orb 4.9°): words, plans and messages. The aspect pulls from the other side of the sky, so its theme shows up through other people.
  • Saturn square the Moon (8°05′ Aries, orb 5.9°): limits, time and commitment. The aspect adds friction and pressure to act.

Jupiter and Uranus are all in reverse on December 24.

The name

Why it is called the Cold Moon

Long nights and a high winter Moon: this is the brightest, longest moonlight of the year.Photo: Sameer Islam / Burst

The Farmers' Almanac and NASA call December's full moon the Cold Moon, for the cold that settles in at the start of winter. The Almanac also lists the Long Night Moon, which fits: a full moon near the December solstice sits high in Northern Hemisphere skies and stays up nearly all night.

As with all of these names, the Almanac says they were drawn from a mix of Native American, colonial and European sources, and that individual nations used many different names. NASA uses the Maine Farmers' Almanac set.

In the Southern Hemisphere it is high summer, so a full moon near the solstice sits low in the northern sky and the night is short. Some southern moon calendars borrow June's name for it instead. A modern convention, nothing more.

Good to know

Two days after the solstice

The December solstice comes just before this full moon. In the north, nights are already getting a minute or so shorter each day. Pairing the two is an old instinct: the turn of the light and the brightest Moon of winter in the same week. See the solstice page for the exact moment.
