  • Know your ascendant degree but not your time? Like hers, it can be worked backwards.

Emma Stone's entry is a little detective story in reverse. For years Astro-Databank rated her DD, with a 12:50 AM time from a French astrology site citing OK! magazine. Then a contributor sent a video in which Stone says her ascendant is 17° Sagittarius.

That gives the time by working backwards: 17 degrees of Sagittarius rose in Scottsdale, Arizona on November 6, 1988 at about 9:32 AM (Arizona keeps standard time all year). The archive rates it A.

We checked the arithmetic: at 9:32 AM MST the ascendant was 17°08′ Sagittarius, matching her stated degree. The Sun is at 14°29′ Scorpio and the Moon at 11°40′ Libra. The old 12:50 AM time would have given a completely different rising sign.

  • Born in 1988? You likely share her Saturn-Uranus conjunction in Sagittarius; check below.

The Scorpio Sun sits in the twelfth house, the private backstage of the chart, with Mercury and Pluto beside it. Scorpio is depth and intensity; the twelfth house is solitude, the hidden and the unconscious. Astrologers would describe it as a person whose real life happens behind the curtain.

The Libra Moon is in the eleventh house of friends and community, with Venus there too. A Libra Moon is warm, sociable and keen on harmony in the tradition, and Venus in Libra is in its own sign. Put together, the emotional style is gracious and people-oriented.

Sagittarius rising is open, funny, restless and candid. That is the face you meet. Its ruler, Jupiter, is retrograde in Gemini in the seventh house of partnerships.

In 1988 Saturn and Uranus met in Sagittarius, a conjunction that happens about every 45 years. In Stone's chart they sit in the first house, under a degree apart. That is the personal part of a generational event: plenty of 1988 babies share the pair, few have it rising.

Astrologers read Saturn-Uranus as tension between structure and freedom, rules and breaking them. On the ascendant, it becomes part of the persona.

Mars in Aries in the fifth house of performance squares Saturn, about a degree off, and Mercury sextiles Saturn. Her Saturn return was exact on December 15, 2017, the year La La Land won her first Oscar.
