The myth
Chiron, the centaur who taught healers
Greek writers describe Chiron as unlike the other wild centaurs: wise, gentle and learned in medicine, music and hunting. Pindar and Homer name him as a teacher of heroes, including Achilles and the healer Asclepius (Theoi).
The best-known story is his death. Heracles accidentally hit him with an arrow poisoned in the Hydra's blood. Being immortal, Chiron could not die, and could not heal. In Apollodorus's account he gave up his immortality, connected with the freeing of Prometheus, and was finally released (Britannica).
Later writers, including Hyginus, say he was placed among the stars as the constellation Centaurus. That is where the modern "wounded healer" idea in astrology comes from: a wound that never fully closes, and the wisdom that grows around it.
