Book T gives Cancer to VII The Chariot, "The Child of the Powers of the Waters; the Lord of the Triumph of Light," with the Hebrew letter Cheth, often translated as "fence" or "enclosure." At first it seems backwards. Why is the most home-loving sign given the card of a warrior heading out?
Look closer at the 1909 card. The driver wears armour like a shell, crescent moons on the shoulders. The chariot is a moving house. Cancer is the cardinal water sign, the one that starts things, and its way of starting is to carry home along: protection on the outside, feeling on the inside, and enough drive to get everyone safely where they need to go.
The sky behind it
Book T calls The Chariot "The Child of the Powers of the Waters; the Lord of the Triumph of Light" and gives it the Hebrew letter Cheth. Its number, VII, never moved: Marseille, Waite-Smith and Thoth all agree on it.
On the 1909 card
What The Chariot shows, and what it asks a Cancer
An armoured driver under a starry canopy, crescent moons on his shoulders, in a stone chariot drawn by two sphinxes, one black and one white, with no reins at all.
The Chariot has no reins. The two sphinxes, one black and one white, pull in different directions, and the driver steers by will alone. For a Cancer that is a picture of emotions: two strong pulls, and the job of keeping them moving the same way.
In a reading, The Chariot often turns up when it's time to stop waiting for things to feel safe and go anyway. Cancer is allowed to bring the shell. The card just asks that it be the vehicle, not the hiding place.

Cancer is cardinal water, so it takes the first three numbered Cups: the 2, 3 and 4. Cups are the suit of feeling, and in Book T these three are Love, Abundance and Blended Pleasure.

Three women raise their cups together in a garden heavy with fruit. Mercury's decan is Abundance, the card of friends, toasts and shared harvests. Cancer's warmth reaches out here from the couple to the circle.

The Queen of Cups and the King of Wands
The Queen of Cups ("The Queen of the Thrones of the Waters", 20° Gemini to 20° Cancer, Sun Jun 10 to Jul 12, 2026) holds Cancer's first twenty degrees; the King of Wands ("The Prince of the Chariot of Fire", 20° Cancer to 20° Leo, Sun Jul 12 to Aug 12, 2026) has the last ten.
The Queen of Cups, Book T's "Queen of the Thrones of the Waters," holds most of Cancer season. She is the most intuitive of the courts, the person who knows something is wrong before you have said a word.
At 20° Cancer the King of Wands takes over. Book T calls him the Prince of the Chariot of Fire, the second chariot in this sign's story, and a fiery preview of Leo. Feeling turns into action.
