  • Think of your Castor: the person whose absence would make forever feel like too much.

  • On a January evening, find the twin stars and check which one looks brighter.

Leda, queen of Sparta, had twin boys with two fathers. Polydeuces, whom the Romans called Pollux, was a son of Zeus and could not die. Castor was the son of her mortal husband, Tyndareus, and could. Together they were the Dioskouroi, "the boys of Zeus," and they were inseparable: Castor famous for horses, Pollux for boxing. They sailed with Jason on the Argo.

Then came a fight over cattle. Apollodorus tells how the twins fell out with their cousins Idas and Lynceus, and in the brawl Castor was killed.

Pollux could have gone home to Olympus. He did not want it. He asked Zeus to let him give up his immortality, or share it, rather than live forever without his brother. Zeus allowed the share. Homer's Odyssey already knows the result: the brothers live on alternate days, one day among the living and one beneath the earth, always together.

The twins were also placed in the sky, two bright stars side by side that still carry their names. Sailors in the ancient Mediterranean prayed to them in storms, and the glow of St Elmo's fire on a ship's mast was read as the brothers coming to help.

Two bright stars close together read as twins in Babylon and in Greece.Alexander Jamieson, A Celestial Atlas, 1822 · US Naval Observatory Library

Hyginus admits there was disagreement. Some astronomers, he says, called these stars Heracles and Apollo. The Castor-and-Pollux reading won out, and the Romans in particular loved the Dioskouroi: a temple to Castor stood in the Roman Forum from the early Republic.

The Babylonians also saw twins here: MUL.APIN lists the Great Twins (MAŠ.TAB.BA.GAL.GAL). So two bright stars close together read as a pair across very different cultures, long before anyone wrote down a Spartan family drama.

What the twins mean in a chart

Gemini is ruled by Mercury, the messenger, and astrologers read it as the sign of pairs, talk and moving between two worlds. The myth goes further than "two-faced": the twins are loyal to the point of giving up half of eternity. If your Gemini placements make you feel split, the story says the split can be a bond rather than a contradiction.

Quick answers

What is the Greek myth of Gemini?

Gemini is the twins Castor and Pollux. Pollux was immortal, Castor was not. When Castor was killed, Pollux shared his immortality so they could stay together, alternating between Olympus and the underworld.

Which Gemini twin is immortal?

Pollux (Polydeuces), the son of Zeus. Castor was the son of the mortal king Tyndareus.

Why are Gemini called the Dioskouroi?

Dioskouroi means "sons (or boys) of Zeus" in Greek. It names the pair even though only Pollux was strictly Zeus's son.

Who is the Greek god of Gemini?

The sign has no single god. Its myth is the twins, and astrologically Gemini is ruled by Mercury, the Roman Hermes.

Are Castor and Pollux real twins as stars?

No. They look like a pair from Earth but are at different distances. Pollux is the brighter of the two.
