The story

Half the zodiac is already a monster

The zodiac was a bestiary before it was a personality test.

Look at the zodiac with fresh eyes and it is a strange crowd. A ram with a golden fleece. A lion no blade could cut. A centaur with a bow. A goat with a fish's tail. The ancient sky was a bestiary long before anyone made a listicle about it.

The Latin Astronomica credited to Hyginus (its date is debated, somewhere in the 1st or 2nd century AD) collects the star myths, and most of them are creature stories. Aries is the flying ram that saved Phrixus. Cancer is the crab Hera sent to bite Heracles. Capricorn is the god Pan, mid-transformation, escaping the monster Typhon.

So for Aries, Cancer, Leo, Sagittarius and Capricorn, the creature picks itself: it is the figure the constellation already draws. For the other signs we went looking through the myths for a creature that acts like the sign, and we name the source for every one.

Two rules kept us honest. First, a real classical or medieval source for each creature, no invented lore. Second, we say clearly when a constellation is modern: the unicorn (Monoceros) and the phoenix (Phoenix) were only added to star maps around 1600.

Fire signs

The fire signs: ram, lion, centaur

Every fire sign's creature is its own constellation. Fire does not do subtle.Johann Bayer, Uranometria, 1603

Aries: Chrysomallos, the golden ram. The flying ram that carried Phrixus and Helle away from danger, whose fleece became the Golden Fleece. A rescuer who moves first and asks questions later. Very Aries. (Source: Hyginus, Astronomica 2.20.)

Leo: The Nemean Lion. The lion whose golden hide no weapon could pierce, the first labour of Heracles and the lion in the constellation Leo. Invincible on the outside, a big cat on the inside. (Source: Hyginus, Astronomica 2.24.)

Sagittarius: The centaur. Half horse, half archer. Hyginus says the Sagittarius figure is Crotus, inventor of archery, while Chiron the wise teacher sits in Centaurus. Wild and philosophical in one body. (Source: Hyginus, Astronomica 2.27 (Crotus); 2.38 (Chiron in Centaurus).)

All three fire creatures are literally in the sky. That fits: fire signs are not subtle, and neither are their constellations.

Earth signs

  • Find Draco on a clear night: it winds between the two Bears around the north celestial pole, visible all year from mid-northern latitudes.

Taurus: Ladon, the dragon of the golden apples. The serpent-dragon that guarded the golden apples of the Hesperides, later placed in the sky as Draco. A creature whose entire personality is protecting something beautiful and refusing to move. Taurus, we see you. (Source: Hyginus, Astronomica 2.3.)

Virgo: The unicorn. The pure, wild creature that, in the medieval bestiaries built on the Physiologus, would come only to a maiden. Elusive, discerning, impossible to rush. A Virgo with standards. (Source: Physiologus (Greek, 2nd-4th century AD); the constellation Monoceros dates from 1612-13.)

Capricorn: The sea-goat. Hyginus says the god Pan, fleeing the monster Typhon, leapt into a river and turned half goat, half fish. Climbs mountains, survives floods. The most practical creature in the sky. (Source: Hyginus, Astronomica 2.28.)

Earth creatures guard, choose and endure. None of them is in a hurry.

Air signs

The air signs: sphinx, pegasus, phoenix

Herodotus admitted he had never seen a phoenix, only paintings of one. Very Aquarius: famous, unverified.Urania's Mirror, London 1824 · Library of Congress

Gemini: The Sphinx. The riddler of Thebes, who stopped travellers with a question and let the clever ones pass. A creature that lives for wordplay and an audience. Gemini energy, minus the eating-people part. (Source: Hesiod, Theogony 326; Sophocles, Oedipus Tyrannus.)

Libra: Pegasus. The winged horse born from Medusa, later ridden by the hero Bellerophon. Graceful, beautiful, and very hard to pin down. Libra, gliding above the argument. (Source: Hesiod, Theogony 280-286; Hyginus, Astronomica 2.18.)

Aquarius: The phoenix. The bird that appears once every five hundred years, said Herodotus, who admitted he had only seen pictures. One of a kind, slightly mythical, impossible to copy. (Source: Herodotus, Histories 2.73; the constellation Phoenix dates from the 1590s.)

Air creatures are the clever, airborne and slightly unreal ones. Two of the three fly. The third asks you questions until you wish you could.

Water signs

The water signs: crab, hydra, siren

Cancer and Scorpio got monsters from the same myth: both fought Heracles at Lerna.Urania's Mirror, London 1824 · Library of Congress

Cancer: Karkinos, the crab of Lerna. The giant crab Hera sent against Heracles while he fought the Hydra. Heracles crushed it, and Hera put it among the stars. Small, armoured, fiercely devoted. Cancer in one myth. (Source: Hyginus, Astronomica 2.23.)

Scorpio: The Hydra. The many-headed water serpent of Lerna that grew two heads for every one cut off. Scorpio is the sign of regeneration. Knock them down and they come back with an upgrade. (Source: Apollodorus, Library 2.5.2.)

Pisces: The sirens. The singers whose song no sailor could resist. Pisces has that pull: artistic, oceanic, a little otherworldly. The sign's own myth, in Ovid, is Venus and Cupid turning into fish to escape Typhon. (Source: Homer, Odyssey 12; Ovid, Fasti 2.459-474 (the Pisces myth).)

Water creatures are about depth and staying power. The crab will not let go, the Hydra will not stay down, and the sirens never need to chase anyone.

Your turn

What mythical creature is your big three?

Sun for the head, Moon for the heart, Rising for what people see coming. Name your beast.

Build your chimera

The Greek Chimera was a lion, a goat and a serpent in one body (Homer, Iliad 6). Yours is built from your big three.

You are a hydra-dragon-centaur.

The head (Sun)

The Hydra (Scorpio)

Many heads, all thinking. That is how you think and lead.

The heart (Moon)

Ladon, the dragon of the golden apples (Taurus)

A hoard of beautiful things and the people you love. That is what you protect.

The outside (Rising)

The centaur (Sagittarius)

Galloping in with a story. That is what people see coming.

Quick read

What was the real Chimera?

In the Iliad (book 6) the Chimera is "lion in front, serpent behind, goat in the middle," breathing fire, killed by Bellerophon riding Pegasus. Mixing creatures is very old. So is mixing placements: your Sun, Moon and Rising are three animals in one coat.

Quick answers

What mythical creature is my zodiac sign?

Aries: Chrysomallos, the golden ram; Taurus: Ladon, the dragon of the golden apples; Gemini: The Sphinx; Cancer: Karkinos, the crab of Lerna; Leo: The Nemean Lion; Virgo: The unicorn; Libra: Pegasus; Scorpio: The Hydra; Sagittarius: The centaur; Capricorn: The sea-goat; Aquarius: The phoenix; Pisces: The sirens.

What mythical creature is a Scorpio?

The Hydra, the many-headed water serpent of Lerna that grew back two heads for each one cut off. It fits Scorpio's reputation for regeneration. The scorpion itself was sent against the hunter Orion in Greek myth.

Is Capricorn a mythical creature?

Yes. The Capricorn figure is a sea-goat, half goat and half fish. Hyginus says it is the god Pan, who changed shape while fleeing the monster Typhon.

What mythical creature is a Leo?

The Nemean Lion, whose hide no weapon could pierce. Heracles killed it as his first labour, and Hyginus says it became the constellation Leo.

What zodiac sign is a dragon?

In our picks, Taurus, because the dragon Ladon guarded the golden apples (Draco in the sky). In the Chinese zodiac the Dragon is a year sign, a separate system.

Which zodiac sign is a unicorn?

Virgo, through the medieval legend that a unicorn would only come to a maiden. The unicorn constellation, Monoceros, is modern, from about 1612-13.

Are these zodiac creatures from real mythology?

Every creature on this page comes from a classical or medieval source, named in the table. Which creature goes with which sign is our modern, editorial choice, except where the creature is the sign's own constellation.
