The story
Before the memes, there was a poem
The oldest list of zodiac gods is a Roman poem. Nobody voted on it. It is still the best place to start.
You have seen the image boards. Twelve marble statues, twelve signs, a caption that says Scorpio is Hades and leaves it there. Fun, but nobody shows their working.
Here is the part most of those boards skip: the idea is ancient. Around AD 10-20, the Roman poet Marcus Manilius wrote the Astronomica, a long Latin poem about the stars, and in book 2 he hands each sign to one of the twelve great gods as its guardian. Pallas Athena takes the Ram. Venus takes the Bull. Phoebus Apollo takes the Twins. All twelve Olympians, twelve signs, no god used twice.
Manilius wrote in Latin, so he uses Roman names: Pallas (Minerva), Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, Ceres, Vulcan, Mars, Diana, Vesta, Juno and Neptune, plus Phoebus for Apollo. We give the Greek equivalents, because that is what you searched for.
His list is not the one astrologers use day to day, though. Practising astrology connects signs to gods through the planets: Mars rules Aries, and Mars is Ares in Greek; Venus rules Taurus and Libra, and Venus is Aphrodite. That gives a second, different set of matches.
And then there is the version you actually want, the one about personality. So this page gives you all three: the ancient record, the planetary logic, and our own modern picks, clearly labelled as ours.
The ancient list
Manilius's twelve guardians, sign by sign

Try this today
- Look up your Sun sign's guardian in the table below and read one myth about that god. Does anything fit?
- Check your Moon sign too. The god there often feels more private.
Manilius's assignments are not about personality. He does not say Aries is brave because Athena is. He sets the gods in a ring, each guarding a sign, and moves on to the next part of his system.
Some of his choices look obvious now. Venus with Taurus and Neptune with Pisces line up with what astrologers later said about those signs. Mars with Scorpio matches the planet that traditionally rules Scorpio, Mars, so Taurus, Scorpio and Pisces are the signs where Manilius's guardian and the planetary god agree.
Others look strange to a modern eye. Leo goes to Jupiter, king of the gods, who shares the post with the Mother of the Gods. Libra, the sign of balance and beauty, goes to Vulcan, the blacksmith. Capricorn gets Vesta, goddess of the hearth. Aquarius gets Juno, queen of heaven.
Read them as a Roman would: a cosmic order where every god has a post. That is a different idea from "your sign is your vibe," and it is worth knowing which one you are looking at.

The planetary route
How astrology actually links signs to gods

Day-to-day astrology goes through the planets. Each planet carries a Roman god's name, and each has a Greek twin. The classical rulerships, set out by Ptolemy in the Tetrabiblos in the 2nd century AD, give every sign a ruling planet:
- Mars (Ares): Aries and Scorpio
- Venus (Aphrodite): Taurus and Libra
- Mercury (Hermes): Gemini and Virgo
- the Moon (Selene): Cancer
- the Sun (Helios): Leo
- Jupiter (Zeus): Sagittarius and Pisces
- Saturn (Kronos): Capricorn and Aquarius
Modern astrologers add the planets found by telescope: Uranus (Ouranos) for Aquarius, Neptune (Poseidon) for Pisces, Pluto (Hades) for Scorpio. Those names were chosen for the planets after they were discovered, so the myths came first and the astronomy second.
This lens is where "Scorpio is Hades" comes from. It is a modern rulership, not an ancient one. Ancient astrologers gave Scorpio to Mars, and so did Manilius.
Our picks
The modern list: each sign as the god it acts like

Now the fun one. These are Shymea Editorial's picks, chosen for personality, with the myth that earns each one. Disagree loudly; that is the point.
Aries - Ares. First into the fight, first to forget the argument. Ares in the Iliad is all impulse and no strategy, which is exactly the Aries shadow. The upside is the same engine: courage that does not wait to be asked.
Taurus - Aphrodite. The rare sign where the ancient poet, the planetary ruler and the vibe all agree. Taurus loves beauty you can touch: good bread, soft fabric, a garden in May. Aphrodite was born from the sea foam already knowing her worth.
Gemini - Hermes. Messenger, trickster, patron of travellers and thieves, inventor of the lyre on the day he was born (Homeric Hymn to Hermes). Hermes has five group chats and is winning all of them.
Cancer - Demeter. The mother who left the earth barren for a year when her daughter was taken, in the Homeric Hymn to Demeter. Cancer loves with the same intensity: soft, protective, and not to be underestimated when someone they love is hurt.
Leo - Apollo. God of the sun's light (in later tradition), music, poetry and very good hair. Apollo performs. So does Leo, generously, and usually for the whole room.
Virgo - Athena. Goddess of wisdom, craft and strategy, who out-planned Ares every time. Athena is the colleague who read the whole brief. Virgo respects that deeply.

Libra to Pisces

Try this today
- Use the council tool below with the 'Manilius' lens, then 'Modern vibe'. Which one feels more like you?
- Read your Moon sign's god as your private self. People often recognise it faster than the Sun.
Libra - Hera. Queen of Olympus and goddess of marriage. Hera cares about partnership, fairness and how things look from the outside. Libra would like everyone to get along, and would like the table set properly while they do.
Scorpio - Hades. Lord of the underworld, keeper of secrets and wealth below the ground, and, for a feared god, famously fair. Hades is rarely the villain in the myths. Scorpio gets cast as one anyway.
Sagittarius - Dionysus. God of wine, theatre and the road trip, who in myth travelled as far as India and came back with a parade. Dionysus is the friend who turns a quiet dinner into a story. Sagittarius approves.
Capricorn - Hephaestus. The craftsman god who built the palaces of Olympus and the armour of heroes, in a workshop, while everyone else feasted. Hephaestus is respected for what he makes. Capricorn knows that feeling.
Aquarius - Prometheus. The Titan who stole fire from the gods and gave it to people, and paid for it (Hesiod, Theogony). Not an Olympian, which is very Aquarius: the rebel who sides with humanity against the system.
Pisces - Poseidon. God of the sea, moods like tides, the deep that cannot be measured. Manilius gave Pisces to Neptune two thousand years ago, and modern astrology arrived at the same god by a different route.

Quick answers
What Greek god is my zodiac sign?
In the oldest surviving list (Manilius, Astronomica book 2): Aries Athena, Taurus Aphrodite, Gemini Apollo, Cancer Hermes, Leo Zeus, Virgo Demeter, Libra Hephaestus, Scorpio Ares, Sagittarius Artemis, Capricorn Hestia, Aquarius Hera, Pisces Poseidon. Through planetary rulers, the matches change, for example Aries and Scorpio both go to Ares.
Is Scorpio Hades?
In modern astrology, yes, through Pluto (Hades), which became Scorpio's modern ruler after its discovery in 1930. In ancient sources Scorpio belongs to Mars, the Greek Ares, both as its ruling planet and in Manilius's list.
Which zodiac sign is Zeus?
Manilius gives Leo to Jupiter, the Roman Zeus. Through the planets, Jupiter rules Sagittarius and, traditionally, Pisces.
Which zodiac sign is Athena?
Manilius gives Aries to Pallas, the Roman name for Athena. In our modern picks she goes to Virgo, for the planning and craft.
What zodiac sign is Aphrodite?
Taurus in Manilius's list. Venus, her planet, rules both Taurus and Libra.
Is the zodiac signs as Greek gods list real or made up?
Both exist. Manilius's list is a real ancient source, written around AD 10-20. The personality lists on social media are modern and vary from site to site. Our own picks on this page are labelled as modern and editorial.
What Greek god am I based on my birth chart?
Use your Sun, Moon and Rising together. The tool on this page gives a god for each. You can find your Moon and Rising with the big three calculator if you know your birth time.
