The name
Why it is called the Wolf Moon
The Farmers' Almanac and NASA call January's full moon the Wolf Moon. The Almanac connects the name to wolves being more often heard howling in midwinter. It is one of the best known of the full moon names, and it shows up in Anglo-Saxon and Native American naming traditions alike, according to the Almanac.
Other January names the Almanac lists include the Old Moon and the Ice Moon. As always, these names were never one unified ancient calendar; they are a modern popular list drawn from many cultures.
In the Southern Hemisphere, the Wolf Moon rises in midsummer. Southern moon calendars that flip the names by six months would call it a Cold Moon instead, which is a little funny in a heatwave.
