MBTI and zodiac signs: two mirrors, no proven link

Your four letters come from your answers. Your chart comes from the sky. Here is what each one actually measures, and why Sun-sign type tables miss most of you.

At a glance

There is no established scientific link between MBTI types and zodiac signs. And Sun-sign tables are shaky even by astrology's own rules: in 38.2% of charts we computed, the Sun's element is not the strongest one.

  • Find two Sun-sign MBTI tables online and compare your sign on both. If they disagree, you have just seen the problem.
  • Write down your letters, if you know them, before you look at any table. It keeps the table from nudging you.

You know the graphic. Twelve signs, twelve neat four-letter types, a Scorpio labelled INTJ and a Leo labelled ESFP, shared a few thousand times. It feels like it should be true, because both systems are trying to describe the same thing: you.

Here is the honest part. We know of no peer-reviewed study showing that people born under a given sign test as a particular MBTI type more often than chance. The tables online are not built from data. They are built by matching stereotypes, and that is why two popular ones rarely agree.

Astrology itself has not held up as a personality test either. In Shawn Carlson's 1985 double-blind study, published in Nature, astrologers could not match charts to personality profiles better than chance.

So why does this page exist? Because the comparison is still interesting when you do it properly: by knowing what each system measures, and by looking at a whole chart instead of a single Sun sign.

Three systems

MBTI, the Enneagram and astrology measure different things

Change your answers and your type changes. Your chart cannot be answered into anything else.Photo: Eric Rothermel / Unsplash

MBTI grew out of Carl Jung's 1921 book Psychological Types. Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers turned his ideas into a questionnaire in the 1940s. It sorts four preferences, E/I, S/N, T/F and J/P, into 16 types. It is a self-report: your type is what your answers say.

The Enneagram of personality is nine types organised around a core motivation, like the need to be good (One) or the need to be safe (Six). Its modern form comes from Oscar Ichazo and Claudio Naranjo in the 20th century (Wikipedia). It is also mostly self-identified.

Astrology is different in kind. It does not ask you anything. It reads where ten bodies sat in the zodiac when you were born, and from where. A chart is fixed; a questionnaire result can shift with your mood, your job or the year you take it.

That is the real reason the systems resist a neat match: one is a portrait you paint, the other is a map you are handed.

Your Sun sign is one tenth of your chart

  • Use the counter below with your birth date and look at your busiest element. Is it your Sun's?
  • If your busiest element is not your Sun's, read the description of that element. Many people find it closer.

Even inside astrology, a Sun-sign type table is a shortcut. Astrologers read the balance of elements (Fire, Earth, Air, Water) and modalities (Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable) across the whole chart.

So we counted. For every day from 1960 to 2009, 18,263 birth dates in all, we placed the Sun, Moon and eight planets in their tropical signs with the JPL DE442 ephemeris and tallied the elements.

The Sun's element was the single strongest element in 39.8% of charts, and top or tied for top in 61.8%. In the other 38.2%, another element simply had more bodies. On average only 2.48 of the other nine bodies share your Sun's element.

Modality tells the same story: the Sun's modality was the clear leader in 45.3% of charts and outnumbered in 40.3%.

Part of the overlap is built in. Mercury never strays far from the Sun and was in the Sun's sign on 51.2% of days; Venus on 23.6%. The Moon, which changes sign every 2.28 days on average, matched the Sun's sign only 8.2% of the time.

The sky behind it

Method: skyfield with JPL DE442, geocentric apparent longitudes on the true ecliptic of date (tropical), one sample per day at 12:00 UTC, 10 bodies (Sun, Moon, Mercury to Pluto). "Clear #1" means no tie. Spot checks of the same pipeline: 2026 March equinox Mar 20, 14:45 UTC, June solstice Jun 21, 08:24 UTC, December solstice Dec 21, 20:50 UTC, matching timeanddate to the minute.

Doing it fairly

How to compare your type with your chart honestly

Hold them side by side, not one on top of the other.Photo: Shelby Bowers / Burst

Try this today

  • After the quiz, enter your birth date and read each pairing out loud. Mark the ones that feel true and the ones that do not.
  • Check your rising sign and Moon with your birth time. They change the picture more than any Sun-sign table.

If you enjoy both systems, there is a way to put them together that does not pretend.

Take the type test first. A sign table cannot then sway how you answer. Our 16-question quiz is a quick, unofficial version; the official MBTI is a longer instrument.

Then look at the whole chart. Traditional astrology splits the signs into two groups. Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos calls Fire and Air signs masculine and Earth and Water feminine; modern astrologers say "active" and "receptive." It is tempting to line that up with E and I. Do it if you like, but call it an analogy.

Notice where they disagree. That is the more interesting conversation. An introvert with a Fire-heavy chart, or a T with a lot of Water, is not a contradiction. It is two languages describing different layers.

Do not use either for big decisions about other people. Hiring by type or dating by sign is the red flag, not the Scorpio.

Is your Sun sign really you?

Enter your birth date. We place all ten bodies in their signs (in your browser, with astronomy-engine) and count your elements and modalities, so you can see how much of your chart a Sun-sign MBTI table actually covers. Or switch to the sorter to see what MBTI, the Enneagram and astrology each measure.

You are a Libra Sun, so meme tables call you pure Air. Your chart has 4 of 10 bodies in Air.

Here the Sun's element really is your strongest one. A Sun-sign table gets the headline right but still misses the other 6 placements.

History

Jung, astrology and the MBTI

The link people sense is partly historical. Jung, whose type theory the MBTI is built on, was openly curious about astrology and described an informal study of married couples' charts in his 1952 essay on synchronicity. He did not design the MBTI, and his couples study is not evidence for astrology; even he treated the results as puzzling rather than proof.

Quick answers

Is there a correlation between MBTI and zodiac signs?

Not one that has been shown. We know of no peer-reviewed study that finds people of a given Sun sign test as a particular MBTI type more often than chance. Astrology has also failed controlled tests, like Shawn Carlson's 1985 double-blind study in Nature. Any table pairing signs with types is opinion.

What MBTI type is each zodiac sign?

There is no official answer, and that is the honest one. Tables online disagree with each other because each writer matches sign stereotypes to type stereotypes. If you want a real comparison, take a type test and then look at your whole chart, not just your Sun.

Why do Sun-sign MBTI charts feel so off?

Because your Sun is one of ten bodies. Across every day from 1960 to 2009, the Sun's element was the single strongest element in only 39.8% of charts, and in 38.2% it was outnumbered outright. The Moon shares your Sun's sign only about 8.2% of the time.

What is the difference between MBTI, the Enneagram and astrology?

MBTI sorts self-reported preferences on four pairs into 16 types. The Enneagram describes nine types by core motivation. Astrology does not measure you at all: it reads the sky at your birth. The first two change if your answers change; your chart does not.

Is the Enneagram connected to astrology?

Not historically in any documented way. The modern Enneagram of personality took shape in the 20th century through Oscar Ichazo and Claudio Naranjo. Some writers pair the nine types with planets, but that is a modern overlay, not part of either tradition.

Did Carl Jung believe in astrology?

Jung, whose 1921 book Psychological Types inspired the MBTI, was openly interested in astrology and ran an informal study of married couples' charts that he described in his 1952 essay on synchronicity. He did not create the MBTI; Katharine Cook Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers did.

Is MBTI scientific in 2026?

It is widely used, but many psychologists criticise it: people often get a different type on a retest, and its either-or letters split traits that most research measures on a scale. The Big Five model is what personality research mostly uses. Both MBTI and astrology are best treated as language for reflection.
