If you ask a room of astrologers for the smartest sign, you will hear two names over and over: Gemini and Aquarius. Our scoring agrees, almost too well. On eight rules about how astrology describes the mind, the two air signs land on exactly the same total.
The tie-break is the first rule on our list, and it is the oldest. Mercury, the planet of language, learning and reasoning, rules Gemini. In traditional astrology Mercury also rules Virgo and is exalted there. Aquarius has no Mercury connection at all. Its intelligence comes from Uranus, its modern ruler, and from Saturn, its traditional one, which is why astrologers describe it as inventive and systematic rather than quick and chatty.
So Gemini wins on the tradition that started the conversation. If you only care about originality, flip the dials below and Aquarius takes the crown. Both answers are defensible, and that is the point of showing the rules.
One honest note before you screenshot this for the group chat. Nobody has shown that Sun signs predict IQ, exam results or anything measurable. This ranking describes the style of mind each sign is known for in astrology, which is a different and more interesting question.
The sky behind it
Mercury never strays more than about 28 degrees from the Sun, so your Mercury sign is always your Sun sign or one of the two signs either side of it. That is why the Mercury checker below only matters within a narrow band.

Third place goes to Virgo, the other Mercury sign. Where Gemini's Mercury is wide and fast, Virgo's is narrow and exact. Tradition gives Mercury both rulership and exaltation in Virgo, a double honour, and the sign is described as the detail mind: the editor, the diagnostician, the one who notices the number that does not add up.
Sagittarius comes fourth on points and it is a different animal entirely. It has no Mercury rulership. Instead it is ruled by Jupiter, the planet of philosophy, law and higher learning, and it is a fire sign that learns by going places. The classic Sagittarius is the person with three degrees, two passports and a strong opinion about the meaning of life.

Rankings by intelligence tend to reward one style, the bookish, verbal kind Mercury stands for. That is why the bottom of our list looks the way it does: Aries, Taurus and Cancer score lowest, not because astrology calls them slow, but because their strengths sit outside the Mercury and air rules.
Astrologers describe Aries as the fastest learner by doing, Taurus as the practical genius with money and materials, and Cancer as the emotional reader who understands people before they understand themselves. If you weighted body knowledge, craft or empathy, the order would flip.
We added three rules to catch some of that: deep focus for the fixed signs, fast learning for fire, and the investigator for Scorpio. They pull the field closer together, which is more honest. Gemini and Aquarius still win, but nobody is far behind.

Astrologers read thinking style through the planet Mercury. Mercury stays close to the Sun. We counted every day from 1950 to 2009: on 51% of them Mercury was in the same sign as the Sun, and on the rest it sat in a neighbouring sign. A Taurus with Mercury in Gemini talks faster than the textbook Taurus. A Gemini with Mercury in Taurus thinks slower and deeper than the meme.
