Ask people for the most powerful sign and most will say Leo. It is a fair guess. Leo is ruled by the Sun, and the Sun has stood for kings and rulers since antiquity.
But power in astrology is not one planet. It has three classic symbols. Saturn is authority, rank, time and endurance. The Sun is visibility and sovereignty. Mars is force. When we scored all twelve signs against those three, plus leadership (cardinal signs), staying power (fixed signs) and influence (Jupiter), Capricorn came out ahead.
The reason is the stack. Capricorn is ruled by Saturn. Mars is exalted there, which tradition counts as one of Mars's most dignified positions. And it is a cardinal sign, an initiator that starts the winter season. That reads as the classic Capricorn profile: ambitious, disciplined, patient enough to wait for the top job and organised enough to keep it.
Capricorn power is not loud. It is the colleague who never seems to try very hard and somehow runs the department in five years.

Leo gets its points from the Sun. It is the only sign ruled by the Sun and it is fixed, so it keeps what it wins. Astrology describes Leo power as presence: warmth, confidence, the natural centre of attention.
Aries gets its points from Mars rulership, the Sun's exaltation and being cardinal. Its power is courage and initiative, the sign that acts first and takes the hit.
