Try this today
- Born on the 13th to the 17th of any month? Put your birth time into the checker: that is where the sign line falls.
- Tap your city in the time-zone chips and look for the asterisks, the Sankrantis that land on a different local date.
If you are planning 2027 by the Vedic calendar, here is the spine of it. The Sun rings in the new year in sidereal Sagittarius (Dhanu), where it arrived on Dec 16, 2026, and crosses into Capricorn at Jan 14, 2027 · 15:40 UTC.
From there: Aquarius Feb 13, Pisces Mar 15, Aries at Apr 14, 2027 · 09:58 UTC, Taurus May 15, Gemini Jun 15, Cancer Jul 17, Leo Aug 17, Virgo Sep 17, Libra Oct 17, Scorpio Nov 16, and Sagittarius again on Dec 16.
Put 2027 next to 2026 and the dates look almost identical. They are not quite. Every crossing runs about 6 hours later, because the calendar year (365 days) is shorter than the time the Sun needs to come back to the same star-fixed point. In 2028 the leap day will pull the dates back again.
Those few hours matter more than they sound. In 2027 5 of the twelve Sankrantis land between 6 PM and 6 AM India time, including the Makara, Mithuna and Karka Sankrantis. A night-time crossing is exactly when calendars start disagreeing about which day to mark.
The sky behind it
Each instant is when the Sun's apparent geocentric longitude minus the true Lahiri ayanamsa crosses a multiple of 30°, solved with skyfield on JPL DE442. A Swiss Ephemeris run in sidereal Lahiri mode agrees on all 12 of the 2027 Sun ingresses to within 0.08 minutes.
The big one
Saturn steps into sidereal Aries for 139 days

Try this today
- Find your Moon sign in the sidereal sign calculator, then count: is it Pisces, Aries or Taurus?
- Note both Saturn dates in your calendar. The October step back is part of the story, not a footnote.
Saturn has been in sidereal Pisces since 2025. On Jun 2, 2027 · 23:57 UTC (Jun 3, 2027, 5:27 AM IST) it crosses into Aries (Mesha).
It does not stay. Saturn turns retrograde in mid-August and backs into Pisces on Oct 20, 2027 · 01:42 UTC, after 139.1 days in Aries. The move becomes permanent in 2028, beyond this year's table.
Aries is the sign tradition gives Saturn as its fall (debilitation), the opposite of its exaltation in Libra. Ptolemy lists that pairing in the Tetrabiblos, and Vedic texts use the same scheme. Astrologers read it as Saturn working in an unfamiliar room, not as a disaster.
If you follow Sade Sati, the seven-and-a-half-year stretch while Saturn moves through the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign and the one after, this ingress matters: with Saturn in Aries, the Moon signs in that window are Pisces, Aries and Taurus. Aquarius Moons step out of it in June, and back in when Saturn returns to Pisces in October.
Western astrology already had this move. Tropical Saturn entered Aries on Feb 14, 2026, more than a year earlier, which is the ayanamsa again: about 24 degrees of head start.
The sky behind it
Saturn's position is the Saturn system barycentre from DE442, apparent geocentric, minus the true Lahiri ayanamsa. Sade Sati is described here as the traditional rule (Saturn in the 12th, 1st and 2nd sign from the natal Moon). Debility and exaltation: Ptolemy, Tetrabiblos I.19.
Jupiter and Mars
Jupiter's last lap through Leo, then Virgo; Mars stalls in Leo

Try this today
- Check the Jupiter and Mars tables below for the IST times, then compare them with your own panchang.
Jupiter begins 2027 in sidereal Leo, having arrived on Oct 31, 2026. Retrograde, it backs into Cancer on Jan 24, 2027, returns to Leo on Jun 25, 2027 and moves on into Virgo at Nov 26, 2027 · 13:14 UTC, where it starts 2028.
For contrast, Western Jupiter enters Virgo on Jul 26, 2027. Same planet, same sky, about four months apart on paper.
Mars has a slow year. It opens 2027 in sidereal Leo at 15.6°, turns retrograde and slides back into Cancer on Mar 9, 2027, then re-enters Leo on Apr 26, 2027. It does not reach Virgo until Jul 4, 2027. In 2026 Mars changed sign 8 times; in 2027 it manages 7, and from January to early July it never leaves the Cancer-Leo pair.
Cancer is Mars's sign of fall in the classical scheme and Jupiter's exaltation, so both retrogrades cross a sign that tradition treats as charged for them.
The sky behind it
Jupiter and Mars are their system barycentres from DE442, apparent geocentric, minus the true Lahiri ayanamsa. Retrograde re-entries are detected as a backward change of sign index.
Venus and Mercury
A Venus year with no backtracking

Try this today
- Want to know whether a retrograde touches your sign? The Mercury and Venus tables list every sidereal sign change with its IST time.
Venus leaves sidereal Libra for Scorpio at Jan 1, 2027 · 17:52 UTC, on New Year's Day itself, and then keeps going. There is no Venus retrograde in 2027, so it simply works its way round the zodiac: 15 sign changes, ending in Capricorn on Dec 15, 2027. If you are choosing dates by Venus, this is a clean year.
Mercury is the busy one, as always. It retrogrades three times, but only twice does it slip back across a sidereal sign line: Aquarius to Capricorn on Feb 23, 2027, and Libra to Virgo on Oct 21, 2027. The other retrograde stays inside one sign.
Rahu and Ketu stay put all year. The mean Rahu sits in sidereal Capricorn (28.6° on January 1, drifting backward) with Ketu opposite in Cancer, and neither changes sign until 2028.
The sky behind it
Rahu and Ketu are the mean lunar nodes (Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms, 47.7) referred to the Lahiri zodiac. The count of three Mercury retrogrades refers to its stations; only those that cross a sidereal sign boundary appear in the sign-change table.
Month lengths
Gemini is the long month of 2027, Sagittarius the short one

The Sun spends 31.45 days in sidereal Gemini in 2027 (Jun 15 to Jul 17) and only 29.45 days in Sagittarius (Dec 16 to Jan 14).
Taurus, Gemini and Cancer each run past 31 days; Capricorn, Aquarius, Libra, Scorpio and Sagittarius each come in under 30. Earth moves fastest in early January, when it is nearest the Sun, so the winter signs go by quickly and the summer signs drag.
Only 71 of the 365 days of 2027 (about 19%) have the same sign name in both zodiacs. The other 81% of the year, a Western Aries is a Vedic Pisces, a Western Leo a Vedic Cancer, and so on down the line. The Western equinox Aries begins Mar 20, 2027 · 20:24 UTC; sidereal Aries follows 24.6 days later.
The sky behind it
Durations are ingress-to-ingress intervals from the same DE442 run. "Same sign" counts days whose noon (UTC) Sun has the same sign index in both zodiacs.

Why your panchang may say a different day
The table gives the astronomical moment. A festival day is a different question: panchangs look at when the crossing happens relative to local sunrise and sunset, and at the auspicious window (punya kala) that follows.

In 2027 Makar Sankranti falls at 9:10 PM IST in India, after dark. That is the kind of timing that sends some families to the morning after. For rituals, follow your own panchang; for the astronomy, the minute in the table is exact for Lahiri.
One more thing
Lahiri is one ayanamsa among several
India's official calendar uses Lahiri, and so do we. Other ayanamsas sit close by: on January 1, 2027 Krishnamurti (KP) is about 6 arcminutes from Lahiri, Fagan-Bradley about 0.9° and Raman about 1.4°. A degree moves each Sun ingress by roughly a day. If your astrologer uses one of those, expect small shifts, not a different zodiac.

And none of this makes your Western sign wrong. Tropical signs follow the seasons; sidereal signs follow the stars.

Quick answers
What are the sidereal zodiac dates for 2027?
With the Lahiri ayanamsa the Sun starts 2027 in Sagittarius, then enters Capricorn Jan 14, Aquarius Feb 13, Pisces Mar 15, Aries Apr 14, Taurus May 15, Gemini Jun 15, Cancer Jul 17, Leo Aug 17, Virgo Sep 17, Libra Oct 17, Scorpio Nov 16 and Sagittarius Dec 16. Dates are in UTC; the exact minute is in the table.
When is Makar Sankranti 2027?
The Sun enters sidereal Capricorn at Jan 14, 2027 · 15:40 UTC, which is 9:10 PM IST in India on January 14. Because that is after sunset in India, panchangs apply their own rules for the observance day, so check yours. Drik Panchang lists the moment a few minutes later than ours, which is normal between Lahiri implementations.
When does Saturn enter Aries in 2027 in Vedic astrology?
Saturn enters sidereal Aries at Jun 2, 2027 · 23:57 UTC (Jun 3, 2027, 5:27 AM IST), turns retrograde and slips back into Pisces at Oct 20, 2027 · 01:42 UTC. It returns to Aries in 2028, after our table ends.
Is Mesha Sankranti on April 14 in 2027?
Yes. The Sun enters sidereal Aries (Mesha) at Apr 14, 2027 · 09:58 UTC, 3:28 PM IST IST on April 14. Regional new years such as Vishu, Puthandu and Pohela Boishakh follow their own sunrise rules, so the festival date can differ by a day by region.
Are the 2027 Vedic dates different from 2026?
Barely. Each Sankranti comes about 6 hours later than in 2026, because a calendar year is a little shorter than the Sun's trip round the sidereal zodiac. Makar Sankranti moves from 3:07 PM IST to 9:10 PM IST IST, which is why it sits on the same calendar day.
When does Jupiter enter Virgo in 2027 (sidereal)?
Jupiter enters sidereal Virgo at Nov 26, 2027 · 13:14 UTC (Nov 26, 2027, 6:44 PM IST). Before that it backs into Cancer on Jan 24, 2027 and returns to Leo on Jun 25, 2027. Western (tropical) Jupiter reaches Virgo much earlier, on Jul 26, 2027.
What is the Lahiri ayanamsa in 2027?
24°14′03″ on January 1, 2027, rising to 24°14′53″ by January 1, 2028. That gap is why every sidereal sign starts 24 to 25 days after the Western one.
Does Rahu change sign in 2027?
No. The mean Rahu spends all of 2027 in sidereal Capricorn (it is at 28.6° on January 1 and moving backward), with Ketu opposite in Cancer. Its next sign change comes in 2028.
