11th house stellium: the people you chose

Friends, groups, causes and the long plans that take a decade to pay off: an 11th house stellium puts three or more planets in the part of the chart that belongs to the crowd rather than the couple. It is the house of the many. A cluster there means the person's life is built around the people they choose rather than the people they were given, and around a future they can already half describe.

The planets say what the crowd is for. The Sun in the 11th is the person who is most themselves in a group, the organiser, the one whose friends are their family. The Moon needs a circle to feel safe and takes the group's mood home. Mercury is the networker, the committee secretary, the one who knows everyone's news. Venus is popular, has a wide circle and is loved in it. Mars leads the campaign and falls out with allies over strategy. Saturn is the few old friends kept for life, the institution joined and served, the cause that costs something. Uranus is at home here and makes the friendships unusual and the politics radical. Jupiter widens the circle until it includes most of a city. Three together describe someone whose social life is a structure rather than a pastime, and whose ambitions are shared.

The 11th also covers hopes and long-term goals, the benefits that come through connections, the professional association, the club, the union, the online community, and in older readings the children of one's partner. Organisers, activists, fundraisers, community managers, scientists in large collaborations and anyone who thinks in terms of the group draw on this house.

Counting whole-sign houses from your rising sign, the 11th is the eleventh sign along, opposite the 5th house of romance, children and personal creativity. The axis runs from what is mine to what is ours, and a cluster at the 11th end is a person who is happiest building something with other people's names on it too.

Say you have the Sun, Mercury and Venus in the 11th house. You have more friends than you can keep up with and you feel guilty about it. You run the group chat, the fundraiser, the reunion. Your romantic partners tend to arrive through the circle and are often friends first. When you are alone for a week you begin to feel slightly unreal, and a party fixes it.

Suppose the eleventh house holds the Moon, Saturn and Pluto instead. Friends are few, old and tested. You belong to one or two organisations and take them seriously; you may have been changed by one. Group politics have hurt you at least once and you remember it. Your long-term goals are specific, written down, and quietly pursued for years while everyone else is still talking.

Or picture Mars, Jupiter and Uranus in the 11th. You have joined and left more movements than you can count, founded at least one, and been thrown out of another. Your friends are wildly different from each other and from you. You believe the future can be organised and you have a plan for it, and people follow you, briefly, until the next plan.

Your 11th house is the sign two places before your rising sign: Taurus rising has a Pisces 11th, Scorpio rising a Virgo 11th, Aries rising an Aquarius 11th. In the 60,000-chart sample the commonest version was a Virgo 11th, found in 11.2% of Scorpio risings, with Uranus and Pluto inside 47.9% of those clusters. The rarest was Pisces, in 3.14% of Taurus risings, which makes the 11th the only house in the sample whose rarest sign is not Aries, Taurus or Gemini. Hold that lightly. The Pisces cell rests on 126 charts, Gemini's 11th came in at 3.44% and Aries' at 3.56%, and gaps of a few tenths of a point at that size sit inside the sample's noise. The 11th is the house of the people you choose, and friendship circles have shapes. Some have a leader and a goal, some work like a family, some are held together by talk and some by a shared belief. Sorting the signs that way says more about an 11th house cluster than element does, so the twelve fall into four kinds of group below. The planets in the cluster still decide your role in it: the Sun tends to lead the circle, Mercury keeps it informed, and Saturn becomes its elder. The sign says what the group is for; whether you belong to one group for life or to six in a decade is the planets' business.

• The team (Aries, Leo, Capricorn): groups with a captain and a target. Aries in the 11th (Gemini rising, 3.56%) joins the five-a-side side, the start-up or the campaign that needs someone to go first, and every one of these clusters was personal; these friendships are made by doing something together, rarely by sitting still. Leo (Libra rising, 5.98%) ends up at the centre of the circle and usually hosts it; 19.7% held Uranus and Pluto from the late 1950s. Capricorn (Pisces rising, 10.56%) wants a committee with minutes and a five-year plan, so the dreamy Pisces rising becomes the friend who organises, and 52.7% of these held Uranus and Neptune, the births of 1988 to 1996.
• The household (Taurus, Cancer, Virgo): friends who work as family. Taurus (Cancer rising, 3.57%) keeps the same five friends for thirty years and feeds them, with no outer planet in any of these clusters. Cancer (Virgo rising, 4.57%) turns the circle into kin, birthdays remembered and grudges too, and 69.3% were personal planets only. Virgo (Scorpio rising, 11.2%) gathers people who help each other in practical ways: the mutual-aid group, the volunteer rota, the friend who turns up with tools. The guarded Scorpio rising lets people in through usefulness, and judges friends by whether they turn up.
• The salon (Gemini, Libra, Sagittarius): circles held together by conversation. Gemini (Leo rising, 3.44%) knows everyone a little, runs three group chats and introduces people who then get on better with each other. Libra (Sagittarius rising, 10.26%) wants a balanced, good-looking circle and acts as its diplomat, the friend who decides who sits next to whom at dinner; only 17.7% of Libra 11ths lacked an outer planet. Sagittarius (Aquarius rising, 10.6%) collects friends from other countries and other faiths, and 26.3% held Uranus and Neptune, the births of 1981 to 1984.
• The movement (Scorpio, Aquarius, Pisces): groups that believe in something. Scorpio (Capricorn rising, 9.58%) belongs to small, loyal, slightly closed circles and remembers who left; 73.9% of these held one outer planet and none held two. Aquarius (Aries rising, 6.65%) is the 11th's own sign: the cause, the union, the online community with a statement of aims, and 37.0% held Uranus and Neptune from 1998 to 2003. Pisces (Taurus rising, 3.14%) gathers the congregation, the support group or the choir, people who need somewhere to belong, and 69.0% held personal planets only. The risk with this 11th is giving more to the group than it gives back.

In synastry an 11th house stellium is three or more of the other person's planets in your 11th house sign, two signs before your rising sign. You tend to experience them as a friend first: the partner who was in your group for years before anything happened, the spouse who feels like your best friend, the person you build something with. In random pairs from the 60,000-chart sample it appeared in 6.81% of cases, or 3.75% counting only the Sun to Saturn. It is a reading of your chart; their 11th is a separate question.

The planet that sets this house apart is Mars. In the natal sample Mars was present in 34.9% of 11th house stelliums, the highest Mars share of any house, if only by a couple of points. Carried over into synastry, their Mars in your 11th is the friendship with an edge: the friend you compete with, train with or campaign beside, and the group in which the two of you argue about direction. It belongs to the activist couple and to the business partners who were mates first. Expect it to push you towards a goal you had only talked about.

Picture an Aries rising, whose 11th is Aquarius, and a friend from a climbing club with the Sun, Venus and Mars in Aquarius. For years it is the friendship you mention most. If it becomes a relationship it keeps the club, the shared plans and the long arguments about where you are both going, and it may never quite feel like romance, which suits some couples well.

The other planets change the friendship. Their Sun in your 11th brings you into their circle, and it happened in 8.34% of pairs; when it did, 41.6% became a full overlay, because the Sun seldom moves without Mercury close by. Their Saturn is the older friend or mentor whose approval of your plans matters. Their Venus makes you a popular pair, invited everywhere. Their Jupiter is a stream of introductions, and their Uranus is the friend who changes your politics. If most of the overlay is Uranus and Neptune, it says more about the years you were both born in than about the friendship: for partners no more than three years apart in age the rate was 6.79%.

Mutual 11th house overlays, each person filling the other's 11th, appeared in 0.454% of pairs. Check the degrees, and remember that in Placidus the 11th is an intermediate house whose size changes with latitude. No overlay tells you whether a friendship should become anything else. Run the comparison the other way round as well, and ask the friend before you look at theirs.

A transiting planet crossing an 11th house stellium reaches each natal planet in order, and the subjects of friendship, group and long-term goal recur with each contact. Saturn's passage is the pruning of the circle: friendships tested and some ended, a group or association that asks for real commitment, a long plan that is finally either resourced or abandoned. Across three planets it takes more than two years, and Saturn's retrograde brings it back over at least one of them.

Jupiter through the cluster widens everything: new friends, new networks, an invitation into something larger, a goal that suddenly looks achievable. It is quick and usually pleasant. Uranus is at home in the 11th and its crossing brings sudden alliances and sudden exits, a change of political identity, a friend who reappears after twenty years; across several planets those come in sequence over years. Neptune blurs the boundary between friend and cause and can bring a stretch of idealising the group, or being used by it. Pluto slowly rebuilds who the person's people are.

For the 11th house, the planet a transit reaches first often names the friend: Venus first and the season begins with someone new, Saturn first and it begins with someone leaving, Mars first and it begins with a fight over the plan.

The complaint most often attached to an 11th house stellium is loneliness of a specific kind: many friends and nobody close, or a life so given to the group that the personal side went unattended. It is a real risk and not a sentence. The 11th describes friendship as a subject the person will take seriously, and people with a full 11th usually end up with the kind of circle that most people say they want and never build. The loneliness, where it appears, is the cost of treating every relationship as part of a network. The correction is usually one or two friendships taken out of the network and kept.

The other misreading is that the placement means a joiner with no individuality. The 11th is Uranus's house and it produces at least as many dissenters as committee members. A cluster there is often a person who has a very clear idea of the future and is trying to recruit for it, which is not the same thing as fitting in.

This page uses three or more planets in one whole-sign house as its definition of a stellium and computes the rarity figure on that basis. Four is the stricter number and some astrologers insist on it; others set aside the outer planets because everyone born in the same few years shares them. The difference matters most when a cluster is made of the Sun with its two closest neighbours and nothing else.

Mercury and Venus are always within a limited arc of the Sun as seen from Earth, so a Sun in the 11th frequently has one or both of them in the same house, and the Sun, Mercury and Venus form of an 11th house stellium is the one that turns up most. In whole-sign houses the Sun sits in the 11th for people born in the late morning, between roughly two hours after sunrise and local noon. It is a cluster about identity, mind and affection pointed at the group, and it is lighter than one with Saturn or Pluto in it.

House system changes the count. In Placidus the 11th is an intermediate house and can be wider or narrower than a sign, so a planet at the end of the tenth sign or the start of the twelfth may belong to it in one app and not in another.
