4th house stellium: the ground under everything

Home, parents and the ground underneath the person: a 4th house stellium puts most of the chart there, at the bottom of the wheel, where nobody outside can see it. The 4th is the least public of the angular houses. Three or more planets there mean that the private life is where most of the person's weight sits, and that what happened at home is not background but plot.

The planets describe what kind of home. The Moon in the 4th is at home and makes family the emotional centre. Saturn brings a strict or absent parent, a heavy house, or a lifelong project of building security. Mars makes the household loud or contested. Pluto makes family history a matter of secrets and power. Jupiter gives a large house, a large family or a strong sense of belonging. Three together produce a domestic life with several strong currents, and the person tends to spend adulthood sorting them out.

The 4th also governs property and land, and often the parent who is felt as the root rather than the public figure. Ancestry comes in here as well: the surname, the country, the stories that got told and the ones that did not.

Counting whole-sign houses from your rising sign, the 4th is the fourth sign along and sits opposite the 10th house of career and reputation. A cluster at the base of the chart is the private counterweight to whatever the person is known for, and often the reason they can be known for it at all.

Say you have the Sun, Moon and Mercury in the 4th house. You are most yourself at home, family conversation is constant, and you probably know your relatives' stories in more detail than they do. Working from home suits you. Leaving a house you have lived in is a real loss, not an errand, and you will keep the keys longer than necessary.

Suppose the cluster is Saturn, Pluto and Venus. Family is serious business. There may have been a controlling or absent parent, a house that had to be held together, or an inheritance with strings attached. The adult response is often a fierce protectiveness about one's own home and a slow, careful way of letting people in, followed by total loyalty once they are.

Or picture Mars, Jupiter and Uranus at the base of the chart. The household is large, noisy, and changes often: many moves, renovations, arguments, sudden departures and arrivals. This person may relocate more than most and yet have a strong sense of where they are from, which they will explain at length to anyone who asks.

The sign on your 4th house is the third sign after your rising sign: Aries rising has a Cancer 4th, Libra rising a Capricorn 4th, Leo rising a Scorpio 4th. The 4th is the root of the chart, the part of the sky under your feet when you were born, and the tropical signs are themselves defined by the seasons. Aries begins at the March equinox, Cancer at the June solstice, Libra at the September equinox and Capricorn at the December solstice. The sign of a 4th house stellium therefore says what season a person's foundations are set in.

The seasons are not equally likely. All three spring 4th houses were rare in the 60,000-chart sample: 3.62% of Capricorn risings had an Aries 4th house stellium, 3.17% of Aquarius risings a Taurus one, the rarest version, and 3.18% of Pisces risings a Gemini one. All of them were made of personal planets, for the reason the 7th house page sets out. The commonest belonged to the winter solstice sign: a Capricorn 4th, found in 11.47% of Libra risings, with Uranus and Neptune inside 56.4% of those clusters. Two notes before the list. The season is the sign's, not your birthday's, so a midsummer baby can have a winter 4th. And readers south of the equator have their seasons the other way round; the tropical signs stay tied to the equinoxes and solstices, so read spring here as the quarter that opens at the March equinox.

• Spring 4th houses: Aries (Capricorn rising, 3.62%), Taurus (Aquarius rising, 3.17%), Gemini (Pisces rising, 3.18%). Home as something started rather than inherited. Aries at the base of the chart leaves early, builds from nothing and argues at the dinner table, with Mars ruling the house. Taurus wants land, a garden and a house paid off, and stays put once it has them, which the outwardly unattached Aquarius rising rarely admits to wanting. Gemini's home is full of siblings, books and phones, and often splits between two addresses. With no generational planet in any of these, the reading belongs to this person's household and not to their age group.
• Summer 4th houses: Cancer (Aries rising, 3.85%), Leo (Taurus rising, 6.16%), Virgo (Gemini rising, 10.81%). Home at full growth. Cancer is the 4th house's own sign, so the Moon rules a house it naturally belongs to, and the Aries rising who looks independent turns out to be the one who keeps the family together; 72.9% of these were personal planets only. Leo makes the home a place to host in and be proud of, and 21.5% of Leo 4ths held Uranus and Pluto, the births of 1955 to 1958. Virgo, the late-summer harvest sign, runs the household on lists, repairs and the care of older relatives, and 48.9% of these held Uranus and Pluto from the 1960s.
• Autumn 4th houses: Libra (Cancer rising, 10.68%), Scorpio (Leo rising, 9.29%), Sagittarius (Virgo rising, 10.96%). The year turns towards storage and letting go. Libra wants a home that is fair, good-looking and shared evenly, and often belongs to someone who grew up between two parents' households. Scorpio's home keeps secrets, money and grudges, and the family history matters more than the family admits; 78.0% of Scorpio 4ths held one outer planet and none held two. Sagittarius keeps the door open to lodgers, relatives from abroad and a move to another country, and 25.9% carried Uranus and Neptune, the births of 1981 to 1984.
• Winter 4th houses: Capricorn (Libra rising, 11.47%), Aquarius (Scorpio rising, 7.04%), Pisces (Sagittarius rising, 3.83%). Home as something to get through and keep standing. Capricorn, which opens at the solstice, gives the charming Libra rising a strict or absent parent, a mortgage taken seriously and a lifelong wish to own the roof. Aquarius makes the home unconventional, shared or often rearranged, and 40.1% of these held Uranus and Neptune from 1998 to 2003. Pisces, the end of the season, is the home with soft walls: a family that takes everyone in, a house near water, a childhood that is hard to put into words. Of the Pisces 4ths, 71.9% held no outer planet.

In synastry a 4th house stellium means three or more of the other person's planets fall in your 4th house sign, the third sign after your rising sign. You experience them as domestic: the partner you could move in with, the friend whose kitchen feels like yours, the in-law who reminds you of a parent. Their planets in your 4th describe what they stir in your private life, and it does not follow that yours do the same in theirs.

The pairing astrologers mention most is the swap: their planets in your 4th while yours sit in their 10th, so that one person feels like home and the other like a public role. It is easy to romanticise, so we counted it. In 200,000 random pairs drawn from the 60,000-chart sample, the second person put three or more bodies in the first person's 4th and the first put three or more in the second's 10th in 0.447% of pairs. The plain mutual version, three or more each way into each other's 4th, came up slightly more often, in 0.564% of pairs, about one in 180. At the looser cut of two or more each way, the swap reached 4.3% and the both-in-the-4th version 4.8%. The swap happens, and it is memorable when it does, but it is no more common than chance would produce. It is a pattern of interpretation, not of numbers.

When it does occur, it often reads as a division of labour. Imagine a couple in which her Moon, Venus and Saturn fall in his 4th and his Sun, Mercury and Mars fall in her 10th. She may be the one who chooses the house and keeps the family calendar; he may be the one whose job decides which city the house is in. It can just as easily run the other way, because the overlay names the subjects, home and standing, and the people decide who carries which. The 10th house page reads the same pair from the career side.

A one-way 4th house overlay is commoner: 7.28% of random pairs, or 3.74% counting only the Sun to Saturn. Most arrive with the partner's Sun. A partner's Sun fell in the first person's 4th house sign in 8.26% of pairs, and 43.5% of those became a full overlay, since Mercury and often Venus share the Sun's sign.

Read the planets before the count. Their Moon in your 4th is the person who feels like family within weeks. Their Saturn brings structure to the house, or the feeling of being parented, welcome or not. Their Mars makes the home the place you argue, often about the home itself. Their Venus wants to decorate, and their Jupiter wants a bigger place. If most of the overlay is their Uranus, Neptune or Pluto, it largely reflects being born in the same years: pairs born within three years of each other produced a 4th house overlay in 7.33% of cases. Check how close their planets are to your IC, the lowest point of the chart, which in whole-sign houses can sit in the 3rd, 4th or 5th sign and in Placidus is the 4th cusp itself. And remember the limit: an overlay describes how private life feels with someone, not whether you should share one.

A transit through a 4th house stellium is a long domestic season. The transiting planet meets each natal planet in order, so the subject of home, family and roots recurs over months, and with an outer planet over years, each time with a different emphasis. Saturn across the cluster is the classic period of moving, buying, repairing, caring for a parent or losing one, and it can take two years or more to finish, with retrograde loops returning to individual planets.

Jupiter's passage is usually gentler: a bigger place, a return home, a family expanding, a period of feeling settled. Uranus through the cluster is the uprooting, often spread over several years, with each planet's contact producing a separate shift in living arrangements. Pluto is slowest of all and tends to bring family history to the surface a piece at a time, until the whole of it has been looked at.

The first planet the transit reaches opens the theme, and the last closes it. Between them, the middle can feel like a long renovation with the walls down and no clear date for the plasterer.

A 4th house stellium is frequently read as a difficult childhood and left there. That is a shortcut, not an interpretation. The 4th house is where the person's foundations are, and a cluster means the foundations are prominent, complex and worth attention. Some of the most secure people have this placement; they built the security themselves, deliberately, because the house made it matter.

The other misreading is that the person is a homebody with no public life. The 4th is opposite the 10th, and a strong base often supports a strong career. What is true is that the person's real work of the heart is done in private, and that they will not do well anywhere they cannot make a home.

Three planets in one house is the definition this page uses to compute its rarity figure. Some astrologers require four, some discount the outer planets because everyone born in the same few years shares them, and some include the Moon's nodes or the chart angles, which most do not. Sun, Mercury and Venus clusters are the commonest type in any house, because Mercury and Venus stay within a few dozen degrees of the Sun; in the 4th they belong to people born late in the evening, in the hours before local midnight.

House system is the other variable, and for the 4th it matters more than usual. In Placidus, the 4th house cusp is the IC, a computed point, and the house can be much larger or smaller than thirty degrees. In whole-sign, the 4th house is simply the fourth sign, and the IC may fall in the third, fourth or fifth sign. A planet in the late third sign or early fifth can sit in the 4th house under one system and not the other, so a stellium may depend on the setting in your app rather than on the sky.
